I’m trying to use JOSM, and after searching around, I got it to load ogf, but now the add node, add way are greyed out. Any ideas?

The only thing I can guess is that you haven’t actually downloaded any data or area into JOSM. Try using the File->Download window.

I did that, but it comes up with a map from openstreetmap. I’m pretty sure I have everythingset up correctly.
The FAQ instructions need to be updated a bit.

How do you feel the FAQ instructions are inaccurate? If you have an idea for making them more clear, you are free to make suggestions, but complaining they need to be updated without making suggestions feels unproductive and leaves me with no clue as to what might need to be updated.
In fact, many users are successfully using JOSM without major issues, presumeably after using the information as is in the FAQ. It’s true there are some quirks with JOSM, but they can be dealt with. There was an issue with OAuth a while back (see thread here), but your issue does not seem related to that. You’re the only person who has reported the problem you’re describing so far.

Woah, cut me a bit of slack. I was on my cell phone at the time, and I don’t like typing long screeds on its keypad.
I had to google around for some settings that I didn’t seein the new user wiki, like turning on the remote control.

That is more informative, definitely. Sorry to seem harsh - it’s important for people to remember that when they encounter technical problems, they are rarely “universal” and often problems are unique to a given individual’s specific system, working environment or “style of work.”
I had never heard of the “remote control” option in JOSM until your comment - it actually took me a moment to realize that what you’re referring to is the option in the OGF map browser window to invoke JOSM using “edit”. I have never used JOSM this way, and indeed it never had been salient to me that I could do so. If I want to map from the browser window, I use the “export” option to save the file locally, then open it using JOSM. In fact, however, generally I just download from the map using the dialogs native to JOSM (including the “slippy map”, bookmarks and “cut-n-pasted” map URLs - which are the first three tabs on the “download from OSM” dialog window).
It may indeed be worthwhile to add a comment about remote control to the FAQ. Since you’ve encounted the issue, and since our website is collaborative, you have the right and ability to edit the FAQ yourself if you think it would be useful to the community. Only in this way can the information available to new users continuously be improved.
Anyway remember that everything you see on OGF has been made by users just like you - people volunteer to do stuff like creating a FAQ because we like OGF and we have some time to do it. We aren’t necessarily particularly smart or “expert” about things. So sorry if my tone was harsh in my previous comment.

Glad you figured it out! I’m still learning too - JOSM is definitely a challenge to figure out sometimes, but the results are worth it. Eventually, hopefully, we can evolve some great documentation for mappers on our wiki.
