I had the same thoughts a few weeks ago and it looks like it is possible with OSM-data… (see this website)

I think what is most important for me with imaginary maps is that it leaves the 3D-view (or: human perspective view) to your own imagination. I like to discover details in imaginary cities that regarding some aspects remind me of real places. In most cases, they remind me of different real places and in my mind, I imagine the OGF place as a mixture of single elements from these different real places.
For example: In Tarott where I currently move from a rough to a very detailed mapping style in the inner city, I imagine that my U5 elevated metro line is “a bit” like the elevated part of M6 metro line in Paris, facades are “a bit” like in Berlin, parks are “a bit” like in London… and so on, it changes from time to time.
I think, 3D rendering would be nice, but it destroys the imagination a bit, like when your parents read your favourite book to you when you’re a small child, you build up your imagination upon those texts - and later you watch the story as a movie, where everything looks completely different.
This may be a very subjective view, but it’s one of my basic ideas of imaginary mapping.

If it was rendered the way you’d dreamed it, then yes, fantastic. But would it be? Probably not (or not without years more work).
But it is good to imagine these places in 3D while you’re mapping, I think.

I made a 3d model in sketchup of part of Riispere which you can see a view of part of here: http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/File:Riispere_south_view.png. It’s a bit crude as I only used simple textures, but it was a helpful exercise to plan out the town.
