Location and character of a territory

Posted by KVh on 24 June 2014 in English.

Hello,

I’m new here and I like this website very much. In other geofiction projects my problem always was that I didn’t have the right software to map my country. So this was what I was looking for. I just started building a small Dutch region in Commonia to test my skills (location).

I have a question about this project: I assume this project takes place on a different planet that is similar to Earth in 2014. But does this also mean that the planet have the same characteristics as Earth? So are countries near the equator tropically hot and countries near the poles arctic cold? Do adjacent countries have a common history? In short: Does the location of your territory determine how your territory should look like?

Best, KVh

Hellllo :)

Seeing it’s an experiment, I don’t think the harmony of it all matters much right now. For all these questions, I think the admins should answer.

For the climate, I think reason should be used - but if it’s in the future, there’s no reason technology could not change the climate to some extent, for example.

I see OGF right now as a big playground without much rules. I have some experience with realistic fantasy world creation, and I found that too much realism destroy realism.

If you see the land of this planet, there are some structures as on earth. So I use OpenGeoFiction as a planet great like the earth with clima zones hotter at Aequator as at the poles. May be more rain as on earth in some zones. So my land “Latina” is not so hot as a land on earth near the Aequator. You can think, the Ekliptik of the OGF-planet is lesser than 23° and the seasons are more equal.

I try to imagine Orinoco as being slightly sub tropical in the south, maybe similar to Northern Florida in the US. I could see a warm ocean current running the channel that separates Orinoco from Commonia. The northern parts of Orinoco would be a little cooler with some areas similar to Atlantic Canada and some parts in the west and central similar to Wyoming. Orinoco Lies in roughly in there same spot as central Japan in the real world so it may seem realistic.

I’m not too bothered with the accuracy of the climate or terrain compared to where the country would be on the ‘real’ earth. My territory would be over northern Australia in real life, but is modelled on Central and Balkan Europe, which have much cooler climates. There are some Alps-height mountains and ski resorts in the north-west and several long rivers which could never exist so near the equator.
