Hello so I am new here, while an avid world builder, I am not used to JOSM but from what I have read I should be able to do stuff in it. Anyhow the problem is with the connection stuff and just generally editing the map. I cant get a background from the map loaded: its all crossed with big red X’es and basically I dont know how to work with it
What is supposed to happen when I connect JOSM to the api? How can I load the map in?

I have a problem with the red cross as well, but everything else is fine.

Thins can sometimes be caused by the map trying to load data outside the world. Check you are actually over ‘real’ parts of the map when you launch. And check all the connection parameters are correct as described on the JOSM wiki page. You need to make sure you are actually downloading the OGF globe, not the OSM or another.
Or it’s just slow loading.

I also have trouble with red X’s - it is related to slow loading times and is one of the most annoying things about JOSM. Actually, however, there are ways to work around this problem and avoid it.
One solution I use a lot these days is that you can get your coordinates from the main map window in your browser, just do a copy (Control-C) of the URL in your browser, then go to JOSM and open the Download dialog, and instead of using the “slippy map” tab (1st tab), you can go to the “bounding box” tab (3rd tab) and paste (Control-V) the URL - the bounding box dialog is smart enough to grab the coordinates out of the URL and then you are essentially downloading the area shown in your browser window. Make sure you are sufficiently zoomed in for this work - zoom level 14 is about the largest area you can grab in this way.
