I just spent over 2 hours researching and removing dozens of unauthorized edits in my country Mahhal, including 100s of railroads, streets, docks, canals, and other features, by two different users. It seems likely that I will locate other edits or features that were not authorized.
I know that Mahhal looks “stagnant” and not much progress is being made. That is for three reasons:
- 1) I am trying to build the country “in order” - coastlines -> water features -> contours and mountains -> vegetation -> etc.
- 2) I have a lot of offline (paper) maps that I’m working from - these tell me where things like roads, rails and canals will eventually be placed
- 3) I’m currently mostly focused on my other country, Ardisphere, which is a more free-form project which I plan ultimately to open to collaboration
So these unauthorized edits don’t “fit” with the detailed plan for Mahhal. Your improvements are not welcome.
Furthermore, it shows a fundamental disrespect. When you join OGF, you are agreeing to respect other users’ territories. Take a minute and actually READ the ABOUT and FAQ pages, please. Then, ask yourself, is this territory where I am editing a territory I am allowed to edit? Open territories are blue on the overview map. If you have trouble differentiating “blue” from other colors, please see an ophthamologist, or take the time to identify the territories by using the list below the map, where they are labeled “community”.
I have temporarily suspended my own “admin” privilege to prevent myself from banning users and deleting their other work out of anger or frustration.
Moving forward, everyone, please show some respect and some basic intelligence in how and where you edit in our shared world. Commonia and the other community territories are quite large, and I would be happy to provide advice or assistance in deciding where or what to map, to anyone who politely requests.
Thank you.

I sympathize. I had somebody slap a huge area of desert across my border last year and then draw several motorways into my territory (right around a border crossing I’d created) and alter my ferry routes. English isn’t everybody’s first language so I wonder if we should reproduce the territory instructions in at least French (Ataraxian), Spanish (Castellanese) and German (Kalmish) to really make the point clear.

Actually that is an important and valid point. Based on observed users, I would add Russian, Portuguese and Dutch to your list. That might be a major admin-type project worth taking on as we transition the FAQ and ABOUT pages to the wiki. We have a lot of languages represented among us - it ought to be possible.
Having said that, I have the gut feeling that in this particular instance the issue isn’t linguistic but rather attentional. Demuth recommended some kind of tool that provides automated notifications when edits occur within given boundaries. I like that idea, and I know these exist for OSM, but implementing for OGF might be more than Thilo would want to take on. . . I imagine such a tool would require some custom coding and ongoing server-side upkeep.

If you want, I can help for French instructions, I think we already have a few French members.

I can help with Dutch.

You can do that just now - go to the history page and zoom to the area you’re interested in. There’s an RSS (or Atom) feed that you can then save as a live bookmark or subscribe to in an RSS reader. For example: http://opengeofiction.net/history/feed?bbox=86.68350219726562,20.62684005901597,86.82683944702148,20.798485240364766

I dont know and dont need to know who are they, but I would like to turn clear one thing
The user “Mobilerod” is my friend. He was building a city in Tara. Recently, he takes UL213 to him. He didnt download JOSM yet, so I copied his city in Tara to UL213, and I deleted the first one.
Just saying before someone think I was “vandalizing” other users edits.

Eu posso ajudar com Português I can help with Portuguese
I dont know so many portuguese speakers there are in OGF. Just me and my friends “mobilerod” and “vax”, I think… despite my friends understand clearly and better than me the english language.

The “About” page as well as the FAQ are now in the wiki, and will be linked from the main page soon:
http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:About_OpenGeofiction
http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Frequently_asked_questions
So if you want to create a translation for any these, you can just go ahead and do it. Some other pages where translations might be desirable are listed below. I’m sure there are others,
http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Verisimilitude
http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Coastline_Maintenance
http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Administrative_boundaries
Also, it would probably a good idea to have an “Available languages” template like in the OSM wiki:
osm.wiki/Main_Page

Then I’m going to translate those pages to Polish. Maybe some users will need this :)

Thank you to all for comments.
@wangi - yes, that’s how I do it currently - just surf the “history” for a given area. I had been imagining some kind of script that sends a notification email when edits occur in a given area (e.g. osm.wiki/Osm-watch which was mentioned to me by Isleño - not by Demuth - sorry for the typo … there is also osm.wiki/OWL).
The idea of making an RSS out of it is GENIUS, however - I am not normally an RSS user, so it simply never occurred to me. I have just now set up RSS for Mahhal, and it seems to work well.
RE translation: I wholly support the idea of translating key pages, but want to reiterate that in this instance (and in other inadvertent vandalisms I’ve seen), I’m not convinced that language was the issue, and therefore having translated pages would not have helped. I want to be clear, I don’t think the vandalism in Mahhal was intentional - it was just people who didn’t ever read the FAQ/About pages and didn’t particularly think things through. My guess would be that the thinking process was: “oh, this is an interesting area, and already well-conceptualized - I think I’ll put a town, freeway and rail system here.” This is a class of user who views all of OGF as a giant Gobrassanya.

Heh. I have to acknowledge a small irony: wangi’s “GENIUS” suggestion about RSS is in the FAQ. And I never noticed it! So… who’s guilty of not reading the FAQ, now?
Comment from thilo on 23 March 2015 at 22:19
The FAQ has only half of the story. There’s no mention of the “bbox” parameter (because I didn’t know that until now). Is there an easy way to subscribe from the web interface?
Also, there seems to be a caveat: from my experience (using Thunderbird), it looks like you only get the 20 latest changesets each time the feed is queried, so you likely miss some changesets whenever you’re offline for several hours.

Common browsers will show a feed icon on the history page, pressing it will then let you subscribe, to the current bounding box, using a variety of services. Not too intuitive though, unless you’re already in the know about feeds…
Common reader apps will cache the results, so not suffer from missing items. Also if you have smaller, localised, bounding boxes this isn’t really an issue anyway.
Would be good if everyone used meaningful commit messages however!
(I’m a big user of feeds; using theoldreader.com)

Once I saw wangi’s comment, I put his sample URL In my chrome browser, and realized I had no RSS reader plugin installed. So… I researched, installed “feedly” (it was the first thing that was free that I googled… I’ll experiment with others), and now when I have a history window open, a feedly icon appears in the lower right.
Feedly only seems to show the 10 most recent. As wangi says, for a smallish bounding box, it’s not really an issue. I’m pretty sure it will work to help me keep me up-to-date on happenings in my territories. Already last night I saw in my Ardisphere feed that histor had placed his brass-company in Caracol (not a problem, since Ardisphere has been open to that sort of small-scale collaboration). It was cool to be able to see it and click thru to the modification right away.
It’s pretty cool, and definitely is sufficient, I think - over time I will figure out how to use it more effectively.
