Commonia, State of Reagan

Posted by No Way on 28 October 2015 in English.

Work is progressing on mapping the state. The topography/geography is a blend of the Southeastern US and some aspects of the Pacific coast blended in. I have purposely drawn the area about forty years behind in infrastructure as to have a historical look in nature as the area is being drawn.

The emphasis at this time is on mapping many of the rural areas and the suburban areas. The cities thus far have a low density.

Yep, looking good! Have you considered getting your own territory? You get a blank canvas and much more interaction with other countries. I found it much easier to draw when I had an empty space with no constraints.

As a volunteer admin, I very much would like to see No Way take his own territory, to prevent future conflicts with other users in Commonia.

Keep in mind that it is possible, even easy, using JOSM, to move existing map-work to a new location. We have copied many cities from one place to another. Moving map-work can also be an opportunity to refine plans and correct mistakes.

I would imagine depending on the size and location of the state that Commonia is definitely large enough to lose a small chunk of land to a newly formed territory, especially seeing how smaller ones like Drevet and Woolonia got split into smaller territories. It would also make sense historically, as perhaps since Commonia has such a weakly organized country and government, that as small areas truly develop they break off and become nations with more organization. That’s just my idea though, it would be up to No Way and the admins.

@Ernestpcosby - I actually agree with you in principle, and it was discussed by admins, but (so far) rejected because it sets a bad precedent - if we start going down that path, Commonia gets carved up and ceases to exist - but it needs to exist as a “landing place” for new mappers. It may happen that Commonia gets carved up as (if) its history evolves, but in my opinion all the parts should remain “blue” (as West Commonia has already been split off).

Ah. I understand. Just suggesting ideas. :P

I agree with Yuanls and Luciano, you should definitely get your own territory, even just so you have more control over your area and can prevent other people from starting random stuff there. Lots of wonderful details you’ve got, you’ve done a great job.

Two suggestions for this territory:

First, I agree it would be best to move this content to a privately owned area, so it can develop in a more coherent way. I think one of the admins would be happy to assist with that.

Second, please note that the common standard in our world is to avoid ALL CAPS. This work will blend in better with others if the same style is adopted. :-)

Cheers,

All caps is used for “incorporated municipalities, i.e., cities, towns, villages and counties. The use of mixed casing denotes unincorporated communities and/or neighborhoods. US Postal Regulations advise that street addresses and cities should be all caps. I know that this does not translate to an actual map but it is a regulation for proper delivery of mail.

For publicly available maps, USPS uses mixed casing.

Besides, we’re trying to create a world map that feels real, and that requires a basic level of consistency. We recommend the style of OpenStreetMap, which uses mixed casing. Not only does this make our project more consistent, but it also enables the creation of mixed casing or all caps maps, depending on how the data is rendered. Thanks for understanding!

Speaking of not turning parts of Commonia into new countries, what’s up with the Isle of Charlington? I just happened to notice a huge island has been carved out on western Commonia (and I don’t mean West Commonia)…

Comment from Yuanls on 29 October 2015 at 23:03

@Demuth That’s been there for some time now. When I was hunting for a place to start off with in May, it was already there. It’s Commonia to you! Maybe some finatical state decided to build a defensive moat sometime in the past. Or I guess that someone just wanted an island! But what to do with the island remains to be seen.

Guess I need to keep better track of Commonia!

Sorry User, No Way. If I had known I wouldn’t have started this multi-nodal American City project in State of Reagan If I knew another use had plans to develop the state in the other side, I wouldn’t have started my project here. If yo want as anyone can You can develop parts of my city like the style you did in Manchester which is very unique except for the lack of higher grade roads is a little weird to me.
