If you’re building an airport, do it in a wide area, like outside the city. Create the ‘runway’ as a line, not as rectangle. If you’re designating the airport as an ‘intercontinental or international’ airport that travels across countries, make the runways, like 3 kilometres to 5 kilometers long. If it’s smaller airport such as a ‘regional airport’ that connects small cities or towns within the country, runways must be smaller, like 1 or 2 kilometers long. Put taxiways beside the runways. Build airport terminals near the runways, like 300 meters in length.

You can use this as example: (http://opengeofiction.net/#map=14/18.5947/89.6086)

Too for an harbour you can look to Khaiwoon or harbours in Latina. Harbours needs a good railway-connection. And the best ist - look in the real world (via OpenStreetMap), how harbours are organisized from little ports for fishing boats to great harbours as Hamburg, London, Rotterdam, Shanghai, Marseille or Alexandria. Every harbour has its own characteristic.

And do not forget lighthouses.

For scale, I find it helpful to have a real-world object for reference. For the airports I outlined a 747, and after placing copies around my airport, I realized that my runways, taxiways and terminals were initially far too close to one another. (The outline also makes a nice water feature. http://opengeofiction.net/#map=18/-36.60813/8.25260 ) Looking at satellite images of real airports, aviation charts, and speaking to a pilot was also helpful. Runways generally point in to the prevailing winds.

For harbors, I outlined an oil tanker, and an aircraft carrier, to get the berth sizes large enough. I don’t know enough about shipping to guess how realistic or functional my harbors would actually be.
