Interchange Overkill

Posted by PColumbus73 on 4 November 2014 in English.

In the Kuhn-Labrie area of Drevet, I think there are too many interchanges on the south end on Crystal Rd and Reback Rd. Not only that, they are too closely spaced. Also, I think it is unnecessary to have interchanges on Crystal Rd considering it runs parallel to MW 73 and MW 173. The same can be said for the interchange at Ruby Rd, Rocket Jump Rd, and Monroe Expressway. The interchange in place is not needed.

Just my opinions.

You’ve got a good point. I’ll be sure to fix that.

Highways are not always built logically.

I agree. I’m not sure I’d care to invest in real estate in Kuhn-Labre with motorway on three sides of the town. Aside from the traffic noise, it makes expansion impossible. Wouldn’t it be better to bypass to the south of the town, and save on both journey times and construction costs? MW373 in the east is completely superfluous too, doubling a route a few miles away. An intersection between 14 and 73 would do the same job and save big bucks.

There are a couple of scaling issues in the country too, particularly the airport. This eight-runway megaport (must be a seriously busy and rich terminal to maintain so many) has landing strips over six miles long, which would only be necessary if the place is being used for some kind of space shuttle. Similarly, the motorway junction nearby is nearly a mile wide. I’m also not sure that a spur into the airport would still be classified motorway.

If I remember correctly, MW 73 used to run straight through, but someone decided to build a giant circle which MW 73 got rerouted onto.

With MW 373, I’m kind of in support of it given how close it would be to the other interchanges, also MW 14 was envisioned as a toll road.

With the scaling issues, I’ve had trouble guessing how big or how small an interchange should be because I can’t seem to get a scale to show up in the editing screen (and I feel like I’m building too small, haha). I’ve also had scaling issues when organizing city blocks.

Scaling in Potlach can be tricky, yes. The map scale changes the closer you get to the equator. What I do is to look at the zoom levels on the view map and make a ‘ruler’ from a bit of card that can be placed against the screen by marking the map scale at each zoom level. I have also found it helpful to find out the size of real-world objects, so have drawn for example the wingspan of a Boeing 747, the length of an ICE train, a tram, the area of a motorway intersection etc.
