Is something up with multipolygons?

Posted by TRJ on 5 September 2017 in English.

Hey you guys,

I have not mapped a lot recently, but I was planning to start again. I noticed that the map, or maybe only the standard layer, had an update. Some of the coulours seemed different, nothing too dramatic, but then I saw that most, if not all, of my multipolygon relations that I have mapped before have stopped working. The intended result of the mapping is still visible in the Histor-layer and the Topomap, but have disappeared in the Standard-layer.

For example:

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=16/-45.5707/141.8990 The fortress in Zelem, still standing proud in the Histor-layer and Topomap, but submerged beneath the water in the standard-layer

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/-45.5251/143.0586 Kolmen and surroundings, the church inside Kolmen is still visible in the Histor-layer and the Topomap, but is gone in the standard-layer. In the surrounding countryside the forrest and the other landscape features are not separated anymore, the forest layer is visible through the grasslands and agricultural areas in the standard-layer.

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=19/-45.65725/142.85881 In my newest town that I was working on, the church is not visible on the square, while in the other two layers it is clearly there.

Did I do something wrong in the past while mapping, or is something wrong with multipolygon relations in the map after an update? Hope you guys can help me with figuring it out.

Thanks in advance

Have you made sure that the overlapping layers are tagged correctly as multipolygons? i.e., the church in Kolmen is in a plaza, so it might need to be tagged as an “inner” edge of the plaza multipolygon to appear on the map, and the fields in the forest should be the inner edge of the forest rather than being placed directly on top of an existing forest polygon/multipolygon.

Only checked the last one because on my mobile: You tagged the outer line of the plaza for the church, not the multipolygon. If you correct it it should be displayed properly.

I have the same problem in Ascot. After the update all Multipolygons are not working, whats the problem?

You are using relations/multipolygons wrong - the tagging should be on the relations, not the ways included in them.

As wangi and martinum4 said, the relation must be tagged instead of the outer ways. I just want to add that the disappearance has indeed been triggered by an update of the standard layer:

I noticed all the buildings I drew in Gobras City with hollowed out areas are now filled in. All my running tracks are gone too.

I think the update is much less forgiving of non-standard tagging in general but especially with respect to relations. All my running tracks and hollow buildings appear to be rendered fine (as best I can tell on mobile).

To reiterate : tag the relation not the way.

I think JOSM finds these errors and corrects them (automatically) if you want. Just load your data and do an error check over all. Also I personally like this stricter enforcement because it ultimately encourages cleaner/more precise mapping.

Kind regards

Martin

TRJ, I took the liberty of fixing the first one - the Citadel. Should help you see what the relations should look like.

Thank you for all the help, special thanks to wangi for restoring the citadel to its former glory. I’m glad that I now know what the problem is, but I’m slightly saddened ny the amount of repair work that have have to carry out…

It looks like everything i drew using the square in a square icon in Potlatch needs to be fixed. I really need to start using JOSM. No excuse no after 4 years.
