Is something up with multipolygons?

Posted by TRJ on 5 September 2017 in English.

Hey you guys,

I have not mapped a lot recently, but I was planning to start again. I noticed that the map, or maybe only the standard layer, had an update. Some of the coulours seemed different, nothing too dramatic, but then I saw that most, if not all, of my multipolygon relations that I have mapped before have stopped working. The intended result of the mapping is still visible in the Histor-layer and the Topomap, but have disappeared in the Standard-layer.

For example:

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=16/-45.5707/141.8990 The fortress in Zelem, still standing proud in the Histor-layer and Topomap, but submerged beneath the water in the standard-layer

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/-45.5251/143.0586 Kolmen and surroundings, the church inside Kolmen is still visible in the Histor-layer and the Topomap, but is gone in the standard-layer. In the surrounding countryside the forrest and the other landscape features are not separated anymore, the forest layer is visible through the grasslands and agricultural areas in the standard-layer.

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=19/-45.65725/142.85881 In my newest town that I was working on, the church is not visible on the square, while in the other two layers it is clearly there.

Did I do something wrong in the past while mapping, or is something wrong with multipolygon relations in the map after an update? Hope you guys can help me with figuring it out.

Thanks in advance

High Zoom problems in JOSM

Posted by TRJ on 18 September 2016 in English.

Hey you guys,

Most of the time JOSM works just fine, but when I zoom in to a scale of a couple of meters, the programm becomes unbearably slow. At first I thought it had something to do with my laptop or perhaps the areas I downloaded, but then user BartleDuc contacted me, telling me he had the same problems when tried to zoom in to make a detailed train station. Yesterday I received a message from user azerty2935, who wondered why JOSM stopped working whenever he zoomed in on his Island nation, so it seems to be a common problem.

If have used JOSM in the past without any complications and I used high zoom a lot for the more detailed work in my towns and cities, also without any problems. These issues the three of us have are a recent thing, They have been bothering me for the last couple of weeks.

So I wondered if any of you experience the same difficulties when working with JOSM and if any of you have some good tips to solve these problems,

Thanks in advance,

Sibling City

Posted by TRJ on 27 July 2016 in English.

Hey guys,

I am currently writing a wiki article for my finally finished city of Alfenschem. I have spend a lot of time working on it and I am looking for a fitting sibling city. The ideal sibling city for Alfenschem would be several centuries old and have (some remainig parts of) a city wall or other fortifications left and would be relatively small (Alfenschem has around 46.000 people living in it).

Alfenschem guarded the confluence of two rivers in previous centuries, so another city with a military or trade-hub history would be fun.

Do any of you have a (small) city that (partially) matches this discription and that is still looking for a sibling city, let me know.

Thanks in advance and happy mapping!

How many people live here?

Posted by TRJ on 13 July 2016 in English.

Hey you guys,

I just finished a small city, or at least I want to start working on something new. When I am done with a town or city I always find it hard to figure out how many people could actually live in it, which makes it difficult to start writing a wiki page about it. I usually don’t start with the idea “Oh today I’m going to build a city for 143,582 people”, I just start building and stop when I am either satisfied with how it looks, or untill I am bored with it. So I wondered if you could take a look at it. I figured that about 45,000 people could live in this city. Is that too many or too few? I envision a place with mostly low rise buildings, but also some appartment buildings of 5 to 7 stories high. It will probably become a regional centre, hence the slightly oversized industrial centre.

How do you guys decide how many people can live in your cities? Or do you build a city for a specific population?

Thanks in advance

Origin of the Drulli people

Posted by TRJ on 25 January 2016 in English.

Hey you guys,

I was planning on expanding the wikipage of the Drull Free State, a page that was partially written by Luciano and partially by me. The Drull Free State is a community territory, but I am trying to create its background story.

The Drull Free State is going to be a third world country (there seem to be very few of those in OGF), that is still struggling with its colonial past en its post-colonial consequences. Two thirds of the country’s population descent from the slaves that were brought to the country during colonial times. Although slavery is a touchy subject, to say the least, I think it will give the OGF-world a more realistic feel. It would also provide “my country” (Forrintia) with some shady parts for its history, and thus would make its history more interesting.

So I have a couple of questions: 1. Do you guys think that we can write about detailed (fictional-OGF) slavery on the wiki (keeping in mind the sensitivities of former real world slavery), or would that be inappropriate?

  1. If we can write about this, were would the slaves come from? I guess the easiest thing would be from other community territories, like commonia. (side-question: Do the Dagenlanden still exist? East-Commonia, has dagelandic as its language, which is dutch, the same as my language in Forrintia. So I see possibilities there).

  2. Would everybody be okay with me writing about the Drulli people being from other community territories?

  3. Can I use one of your countries as one of the sources of the Drulli people (I know that most of you wouldn’t like that, but it would create opportunities for interesting creool languages and historic ties with other countries )? Or maybe as a source of contract laborers after the abolition of slavery, like like India in the 19th century.

Update the Area table

Posted by TRJ on 21 January 2016 in English.

Hey you guys,

I was wondering wether there was going to be an update of the OGF: Area table anytime soon. The last update was several months ago, and I would realy like to know how big my provinces are. I wouldn’t mind helping out once in a while if it is a lot of work for the admins to update the page, but i don’t know how the areas are calculated…

Thanks in advance,

Can't select map features anymore

Posted by TRJ on 1 March 2015 in English.

Hi everyone,

Since a day or two I’m having problems with editing (I’m using “edit with id”). Normally I can simply click on a map feature and it highlights and a panel with details will open. But now whenever I click on something nothing happens. When I move my cursor over map feature it will still show in the left editing panel that it’s for example a residential area or a road, but when I click on it doesn’t highlight.

I’m using opengeofiction for about two and a half weeks now, so I’m still quite new to it. Maybe I accidently messed around with some options or something. Does anyone know what is going on and have a solution for the problem?

Thanks in advance
