Hey you guys,
I was planning on expanding the wikipage of the Drull Free State, a page that was partially written by Luciano and partially by me. The Drull Free State is a community territory, but I am trying to create its background story.
The Drull Free State is going to be a third world country (there seem to be very few of those in OGF), that is still struggling with its colonial past en its post-colonial consequences. Two thirds of the country’s population descent from the slaves that were brought to the country during colonial times. Although slavery is a touchy subject, to say the least, I think it will give the OGF-world a more realistic feel. It would also provide “my country” (Forrintia) with some shady parts for its history, and thus would make its history more interesting.
So I have a couple of questions: 1. Do you guys think that we can write about detailed (fictional-OGF) slavery on the wiki (keeping in mind the sensitivities of former real world slavery), or would that be inappropriate?
-
If we can write about this, were would the slaves come from? I guess the easiest thing would be from other community territories, like commonia. (side-question: Do the Dagenlanden still exist? East-Commonia, has dagelandic as its language, which is dutch, the same as my language in Forrintia. So I see possibilities there).
-
Would everybody be okay with me writing about the Drulli people being from other community territories?
-
Can I use one of your countries as one of the sources of the Drulli people (I know that most of you wouldn’t like that, but it would create opportunities for interesting creool languages and historic ties with other countries )? Or maybe as a source of contract laborers after the abolition of slavery, like like India in the 19th century.

You can use Hoppon it is half- Japanese half made up country, that is supposed to reflect a more militaristic Japan, I want it to be modern but also be a kind of “Russia-like” and constantly treating immigrants from its neighbors badly due to the Hopponese possibly being related to native South Ulethan groups and seeing these people as invaders. For example it would be as advanced and say have similar rates of crime to Japan of 1990’s as long as with birth rate etc. I would of course replace the Yakuza with a much smaller criminal organization(s). This immigrant group coming from such a xenophobic nation like Hoppon would be similar to the Brazilian immigration of Japanese into Brazil. Hoppon is going to be a large nation of well over 100 million people so any amount of immigrants you deem necessary would be okay. IT would be better if we could no what historical time as their is a period of nearly 100 years were Hoppon had very little contact with the outside world.

Thank you Portopolis! I have sent you a message about collaboration between our countries.

I see no problem with “sourcing” the slave trade from “blue countries.”
Another idea, however, might be to “source” the slave trade in the Western Hemisphere - vaguely. You could say they were brought from e.g. Kartumia or Pelanesia. This can be one of the “facts on the ground” for anyone who later adopts a country at those locations, and perhaps even provide some inspiration for some interesting future collaboration or history. Likewise for contract laborers.
RE Dagelanden - the original creator gave up the country and does not seem happy with the idea of a “dutch” homeland in Uletha. Consequently, the issue of where “dutch” came from is rather up in the air and unresolved.
Right now, we have at least 4 competing “dutch” homelands, in wildly different places. I feel disappointed that our dutch users can’t work this out, given the amount of amazing collaboration, cooperation and compromise we’ve seen from many of our other “real world” language sub-communities - including “spanish,” “italian” and “english” - which has led to a our world having a “unified history” for those languages.
However, it would really make me and some of the other admin team uncomfortable to NOT have the “dutch” homeland logically grouped with the other “european” countries of northwest Uletha (Inglerland, Kalm, Galicja, etc.) - it just stretches linguistic plausibility too much. But without community consensus, we may just have to “ignore the problem.”
Happy mapping.

If you can’t work something out with Portopolis, I think the next best solution would be to simply have the Drulli be the native inhabitants of Drull. I feel like the more constraints we place on the new continents or the blue countries, the more complicated things get when we try to further develop those areas in the future.

@isleño - that’s a good point. And true, there’s always the “arrive and enslave the locals” - which many people don’t realize was essentially what the Spaniards did in the New World. It wasn’t until several generations later that the slightly modified latifundio model emerged, evolving from outright slavery to a kind of serfdom.

@TRJ Actually, speaking of which (I meant to ask you because I was trying to add a FreedemiAir flight to the city of Drull) Is there a certain historical plan on how Drull became so developed in spite of being enslaved and everything else? I noticed the history of the country is far more detailed than that of the country so far.
And on a lighter note, does the city itself have an airport or is it just that smaller one southwest of the city?
Thanks, Ernestpcosby
