I can see why the video thinks the features make a good city but the some things just aren’t universal. If you wandered into an alleyway in Britain you’re likely to get robbed or offered drugs. If you kept all buildings under 5 storeys in for example, China, you’d be in serious trouble. The video is rather Euro-centric, and different opinions and viewpoints on for example, social cohesion and urban living, exist throughout the world. I wouldn’t use the guidelines in this video unless you build a European style city. Even then, no city is perfect. A city will always have flaws.
Another reason why I don’t really like either of the videos is the tone of voice: it’s like it’s saying you SHOULD do this and CAN’T do that. In reality, our options are way more open.
I can totally agree on the point about Birmingham though. Horrible place to be, although it is getting better. Slowly.
I do think the second video was wayyy more universally applicable than the first though. It’s also no surprise that the comments are disabled!

OMG this video makes me feel uncomfortable. As if there were a 6 ingredients recipe to create an attractive city…
If we’d have followed this kind of method, we would live in medieval cities… Modernity, new ideas on planning and architecture had a major influence on the evolution of cities, even in Europe.
Let’s be open on new ideas and not too conservative.
