Hey guys,
so I’ve just made these islands in the middle of the Cruzando delta. I’ve done my best on these, but they still don’t really look like anything you might see in real life. Does anyone have any advice on how to spruce them up a bit?

The most jarring thing to me is, why does it head north after the wetlands? Surely the wetlands should be the delta?

For that one, you’d wanna talk to donnamaw. That said, they’re not meant as complete wetlands as much as marshy forest.

I agree with wangi at that point. Before thinking about how to make your islands realistic, you should ask yourself: How is it possible that there is a delta if all the water in the river passes through the wetland? Its wetland looks good, so you just have to divert the river.

Thanks for the feedback, but again, that wasn’t my mapping, and the river existed well before the marshlands did.

But that really doesn’t matter - the delta / wetlands there is a good basis for the country boundary, and that’s an ideal thing for neighbouring owners to work together on.
You of course can still have a delta where you have it, but it’s going to naturally fed by the mountains to the west of it.

So how ‘bout those islands?
Comment from Gubble on 13 January 2020 at 17:26
As I believe wangi and Mapping Expert are trying to tell you, as it is right now, the entire delta is unrealistic, not just the islands (which are ok, just use the OGF scale helper to compare it with a real world delta of similar size), and as such, its a bit pointless to give feedback specifically on the islands.

You could make the islands in the proposed and more realistic delta? Just because it was there before, doesn’t mean that you can’t edit it. It’s your territory now.

Hey guys. I made the delta months ago, while the forest to the south was mapped by my neighbour Donnamaw, as we are currently working on natural features in partnership. My belief was that it just was to be mapped as forest, so I’m happy to just get rid of the wetlands tag, and leave it as just a forest.

I mean, you could do that, but the wetlands are already well-mapped, so it would be a shame.

I think, at the first look far away the wetlands may look good - but if you look nearer, then there we see some chaotic mapping - often in three layers.

Whenever I’m stumped at how to make something realistic, I look at something real.
Find a river mouth of similar size and configuration to the river mouth you’re trying to draw in the real world. For example, this river in Guyana - similar size, similar islands, similar tropical latitude, similar southwest to northeast geography:

I say making a whole new river running parallel to and north of the border is a more realistic idea.

@Jamie_Clumpas: You are missing the point about the comments. They are about the islands, as they will not look realistic if their environment doesn’t look realistic. Remember that any given entity requires its environment to help in order for realism to be fulfilled. Luciano gave you a great real-world example to model, and there are so many more.
So, keep these points in mind:

Agreeing with Alessa— the fact that we are telling you to relocate the river means that the islands would not exist; implying that we do not want the islands to be there in the first place.
