JOSM can be a bit daunting at first. Get used to editing through iD, later Potlatch. Their results can look clunky on the map, but get you used to it. Always be wary of proportions and scale, which is why JOSM is so highly recommended.

I’d say that starting with JOSM is a good option. Really, I don’t see any advantage to starting using iD or Potlatch, everything you do there can be done on JOSM.

JOSM is much more practical. I barely tried anything else.
