Historical and geographical curiosities

Posted by Yuanls on 11 May 2017 in English (English)

Are there any interesting or strange events and locations in your country? It would be cool to see some oddities here!

For Agarderia, there was an unrecognised microstate Free Republic of Zimna Forest declared for exactly a month in 1986 but then annexed by the Agarderian government. Partially satirising 'countries' such as Sealand and Liberland (and possibly the libertarian right), partially the product of boredom and unwillingness to map.

It's on my sandbox page for the time being because I'd say it's a case of overwikification, as the actual village currently looks like this. I'll consider moving the article to a proper wiki page once Agarderia is mapped more intensively and after I've polished up the page and photos.

Does anyone else have any quirky features they'd like to share?

Please make the landuse=residential an inner boundary of the forest, otherwise the forest trees will cover the village.

Other than that, i do plan on making a sort of "Hanseatic League" for the cities on the Egalian Lake, which Jankovar could have been the centre of. This then meant that Jankovar used to be a "free city".

A strange event in my country Singkangia was an undecision to join the AN after the communist government collapsed (somewhere in 1967-1972?). There was a huge debate to make Singkangia a neutral, communist-democratic or democratic nation. Eventually, in 1975 it was decided to join the AN after 59% of the votes were supportive to join the AN with neutral status.

There's the Kingdom of Yawet (, an island nation off the coast of the Gagium Republic that declared independence in the 1990's and remained independent ever since. (I don't have a wiki page for it atm)

Well I haven't done the wiki for it but the largest military action ever in pacifist Freedemia was when a young girl and her group of 20ish friends managed to take over a middle school over the summer with B.B. Guns. The military was at a standoff for about a month as they tried to take her and her friends out without hurting them.

The second largest action came from a group of farmers who were angry about imminent domain and essentially started a tiny civil war that lasted about a week but was mostly just brushed off as a "minor rebellion" by the government.

The Utterland city of Solsburg straddles not just the River Utter but is also divided between two Duchies; Hemmel and Solsburg. Two fortresses used to glower at each other across the river, occupied by opposing factions. The Duchy of Solsburg, in the west, made numerous but vain attempts to storm across into Hemmel territory. This led to the eastern bank of the Utter being called De Bierkaai, after the expression "to fight the Bierkaai", which means to fight a losing battle, or to fight windmills.

The whole of Shadze-Ma is a quirky oddity - with some excuses to experiment with a range of micro-states, including Pāg, unambiguously 'the smallest country in the world' (you can't get smaller than a population of 1 can you?). I suppose at some point I'll go through it and revise to make it a bit more believable, but for now I quite like it - if anything its a bit underwikified, lots of redlinks to fill in about the different islands etc.

I have Massentia, which, although it has a size of ~175 km², has been independent since around 1910. It is sometimes argued that it is the true successor to the previous government and interaction between it and Abrilleron has been very hostile in the past, but the countries have moved closer together in recent times and even border controls have been mostly eliminated, etc. It is fiercely independent though, and Massentia is still well-prepared should anyone decide to attack.
