Abrilleron and Massentia

Posted by _zM on 1 October 2016 in English.

This post is ten months late.

On New Years of 2016, I received my first bit of territory on OpenGeofiction. I started work, but I quickly hit a roadblock. I was having more ideas for my territory than I could map while simultaneously having no “vision” as to how the country was going to be like at the end and progress was going really slowly because I wanted to use JOSM (two hours wasted raging at the relation editor, or lack thereof, on New Years!). Couple that with an absolute lack of neighbors and the fact I was using an invented language and you pretty much have a recipe for disaster (at least I didn’t break Antarephia’s coastline). This meant that after just one month of editing I decided to look for a better place to place my country in and after searching a bit I found my spot - not too far from my old location, actually - on an island off the coast of southern Tarephia, which is where (aside from occasional forays into Gobrassanya) my edits have been concentrated ever since. With the little space I had, I had to think very creatively to put everything where it needs to be.

After a few weeks I got a neighbor, refried sushi, who eventually proposed a short history of the region that our nations (and a bunch of others’) are located in. Which means that I can now extend this history to the present day, giving me more hints to how my country was going to be like.

Breaking my arm also helped. No, I am not joking.

Abrilleron is a former Ingerish colony which was established relatively early. The Ingerish left the colony alone in the early 18th century hover. Abrilleron then promptly joined the Ardoin Trade League (see above). Following its collapse in 1880, Abrilleron descended into a civil war that ended in 1905, marking the day of the creation of today’s republic.

admin_level problems

Posted by _zM on 17 May 2016 in English.

I recently encountered a small problem while mapping.

When I was mapping the “regions” (an administrative division, comparable perhaps to a German Bundesstaat) in Abrilleron, I originally used admin_level = 4 in their relations. However, because Abrilleron is quite small, this turned out to be a bad idea. Because they show up starting at zoom level 4, where Abrilleron is less than 10x10 px, the region boundaries dominated the look of the nation. Now I have tried to use admin_level = 5 instead. Here I have the opposite problem. Now the borders don’t show up until zoom level 11. But at that point all regions are already so big that the name isn’t displayed anymore.

This is how Abrilleron looks at zoom 10 now.

For comparison, the most developed part at zoom level 11.

Do you have any ideas how I can work around this? Split regions into smaller sections? Remove them from the map? Something else entirely?

Hello everyone, I recently started to add some platforms to the stations of my small local rail network(still in Commonia) and I encountered a small problem: railway platforms rendering above buildings, which I placed around the station for testing purposes. This is not a problem with stations above ground, but gets in the way if you decide to have your main railway line running underneath the city center. I know lots of people get around this with metros by having only one line representing both tracks, but that looks out of place if the rest of your line is above ground and mostly has two tracks.
