What's wrong with this?

I mapped a big number of island on a lake in Vinnmark, but when I’m going to upload the changes, a weird error message pops out.

“OSM server does not know about an object that you tried to read, update or delete.”

I don’t know what’s wrong with that but I worked hard on it.

What can I do?

There are two situations where I have seen this error before.

1) If I have a “saved” .OSM file where I have been editing in JOSM (some large project), and meanwhile I have done some quick edit on some object that is within the bounds of that large saved file (i.e. deleting some nodes or ways), which leaves JOSM confused as to where the objects disappeared to when you try to update. I have had only partial, limited success with the “Update objects” option in JOSM in solving this problem, and indeed I have lost work because of it. I almost never save large .OSM “work-in-progress” files anymore, because of this. I download and edit during each edit session with a “fresh” file.

2) If you try to upload data to OGF that you formerly downloaded from OSM, with or without major modifications. There are ways to get around the problem (i.e. copy everything and paste into a new layer, then upload). Anyway, trying to do so is against OGF rules, however. I tried it as an experiment, when I was first learning to use JOSM. Conclusion: it’s possible, but please don’t do it.
