World Organization of Sustainable Urbanism

Hi,

I had the idea of creating the World Organization of Sustainable Urbanism.

The WESU is a an organisation that aims to promote sustainable urbanism around the OGF world.

Here is the head office :

The goal of this organisation is to make a group of sustainable cities to give exemples : to show that natural environment can also be developped in cities and that we can also fight aggaist global warming in OGF.

You can ask a WESU label for your city to join the organisation. But your city needs to follow several rules :

  • be green (with parcs/forests/natural places and clever ecological systems as Gobras city’s woods for exemples : http://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/20.7124/86.6517)

  • be quite unpolluted (not too many highways and carparcs/with a good railway, metro or tramway system/few cars and many pedestrians streets)

  • be social (many pedestrians areas/cultural places/public gardens…)

Some of the previous rules can’t be seen on the map, this is why you should explain how your city is eco-friendly (ex : green energies). You are welcome to add things to this list if you want.

If your city respect these rules, you are also welcome to add the WESU ambassy to it.

Also I’m not english so I don’t know if the name sounds good.

PS : It’s not called WOSU for unknown reasons.

Seriously, I try to make my cities as real cities would develop, warts and all. Woolport is based on NYC and had a Robert Moses-like figure trying to jam freeways through, as well as a large subway system.

@NE2 : Maybe I have an utopic way of thinking and building… But I try to make eco-friendly cities and realistic cities at the same time, inventing new ways of building or restoring.

Logan : Those cities look good, but I can’t see many natural spaces, and the public transports look quite few. Maybe you can tell me more about them (using the rules for exemple), or we can wait and see how they will develop in the coming weeks.

There are several ways to transform a city, to make it greener/cooler/friendlier on the map : adding natural spaces around (natural reserves)/making pedestrians streets/renovating old railways into parcs or bicycle trails… etc

Eco-cities exist in the real world so of course they can be realistic. Do you think that Leluwa, the capital of Onnutu, would qualify?

Leluwa offers:

  • Nearly 70 km of urban rail serving 38 stations, anchored in the center by Leluwa Station, a multimodal rail/bus/ferry hub at the heart of the city.
  • Hundreds of car-free pedestrian paths, especially in the Old Village and other historic zones, established to preserve a unique pedestrian-focused urban environment.
  • Lots of unique social spaces, such as the old colonial squares and waterfront, public markets and temples, hilltop viewpoints and sunny beaches, quiet lawns and gardens, artistic spaces such as the National Sculpture Garden and Gallery Row, the bustling amusements of the Electric Village, the Promenade and the Arcade, and of course lots more.
  • Easy access to preserved wilderness areas, including notable wetland ecosystems within the city, as well as extensive trails to the lush rainforests, rocky peaks, scenic waterfalls and more, protected by the national parks both north and south of the city.
  • Environmentally minded institutions play a prominent role in the city, such as the University of Onnutu (a virtually car-free campus), the Royal Zoo (with its Center for Endangered Species), the Onnutu Aquarium, and the Tropical Plant Research Center (affiliated with the University and Saameva Botanical Garden) are all focused on the survival of endangered island flora and fauna.

The city council of Leluwa eagerly awaits your response. ;-)

Thank you isleño for your support ! And for wanting to make the world better. ;-)

Some cities are easy to make sustainable, as the climate or the relief allows it. But the WESU ambassy also rewards efforts to make better cities, as we don’t start at the same level of sustainability.

I think that Leluwa really deserves the ambassy, it looks beautiful and realistic on the map, thanks to its experienced mapper :-).

The outline of ecologic components is a vital point in modern town-building. So parks, sports, leisure-places, beaches and good publicc tranport with electrical energy (tramcar, metro or subway) and other components are essential in many of the cities of Latina and Zylanda. But basic is the historic grown substance of the city-kernel and that, what cities had to be too - a center of commerce, a minimal density for cultural activities (Jane Jacobs) and some places for industry with not too long ways for the workers..

So you can proof, if you will set Latina (Cidudad), Van Pelt, Porto Colon, Mar y Flora (in Latina) or Elegantia (in Zylanda) will take in your list. Cordoba (Latina) is only at the beginning of give the town a detailled structure.

Good arguments :-). Your cities or Latina, Van Pelt, Porto Colon, Mar y Flora and Elegantia are welcome in the community, we’ll wait a bit to see how Cordoba will look like. You can build the anbassies.

I absolutely appreciate your WESU idea! So far, there are two cities in the Republic of Kalm interested in the label: Tarott and Mendau (not yet ready, but the overall layout of the city is already visible)

Tarott as the Kalmian capital is a national leader in sustainable transit developments. The city has a widespread metro network consisting of approx. 230km, an even much more extended suburban rail (S-Bahn) network, three different tramway networks (Tarott, Kulz and Leuden-Braunsdorf), a high-quality regional rail network and many high-frequency bus routes. There are several co-operations between universities/colleges and transit authority/transit operators for technological (ecological) innovations and other subjects. Also, the city is known for its innovative participatory urban development, offering a wide range of “crowdsourcing” tools and modern workshop forms for an innovative urbanism with an emphasis on social aspects, transforming public spaces to “spots of versatile communication for the citizens” (instead of ugly car-parks, road-traffic dominated intersections and so on). The “Gemeinsame Stadt” (“Shared City”), founded in 2008 and run by a subsidiary of the agency of urban planning, won the “Neue soziale Stadt” (new social city) national prize in 2010, 2012, and 2013.

Mendau (capital of the Arwangen region) is the Kalmian No. 1 bicycle city, with a modal split of 36% of this sustainable mode of transport. Many companies specialized in bicycle production, bicycle infrastructure development and software solutions regarding this subject (e.g. modern navigation/organization tools for cycling) are based within the city. Another innovative part of urban transit is the widespread tramway network, with some routes upgraded to metro-like standards. One of the nation’s most important tram and rail vehicle producers is located in one the outskirts of the city. Many innovations in the tramway sector are tested within the city (e.g. catenary-free solutions, real-time timetable data solutions, electronic priority solutions in mixed traffic…). Also, the city makes many efforts in making its city centre/old town even more pedestrian-friendly. Many public spaces not only in the inner city have been refurbished during the last years. The city is a member of the national “Fußgängerfreundliche Städte” (pedestrian-friendly cities) network. Mendau is nationally (and even internationally) known for its “Meine Nachbarschaft” (my neighborhood) programme. In 2004, a large public funding for (citizen-driven) neighborhood improvements was created. Social, economical, cultural, ecological (and more) bottom-up projects concerning the neighborhood can be funded - if the fit to the overall goals of a sustainable city.

In Garlis, the capital of Norad would like to join the network. It is an innovative city with a good public transit network. It consists of many tramway lines, two metro lines with a third one under construction and a fourth one in planning stage, a large suburban rail (FS) network and a good bus line network. Many efforts for a good “social liveability”, strong neighborhood communities, liveable public spaces and a pedestrian-friendly city centre are being made.

By the way: The city of Tarott wants to invite the WESU to the EXPOMONDIALE 2018 world exhibition with its own pavillon! The regional airport of Tarott-Jübelstein will be closed in December, after that, the ground will be prepared for the EXPOMONDIALE construction, which is due to start in summer 2015.

Praetor Hills, Lallemand is going to be a city built in the Forests with many small parks. It is a large suburb of Avewood The largest city in the country by size but low population. http://opengeofiction.net/#map=13/13.9542/95.5795 . North Obodo also a large suburb of Avewood. Hi Johannes ! I’m happy to hear from your cities again, with good ideas and arguments about sustainable urbanisme and society :-). I’m not very talkative in English (or Ingerish I would say), and your cities are welcome in the organisation. ThankS to the city of Tarott for inviting the WESU to Expomondiale !
