Tilia and UL203 OGF personal project

Posted by clik on 13 December 2014 in English.

I started drawing a city (yes, real paper and real pencils !) called Tilia, 1 year ago. I’m drawing maps for years and I’m doing it better everyday, Tilia is a kind of goal of the big city I would love to live in. It is inspired from many different european cities and has a great history that I’m still writing. When I learn good facts about a real city, I try to apply them to Tilia. You can see more about it on : http://urbangeofiction.stadtkreation.com/tilia/

I’m still drawing it, an update will be added in a few weeks. I’m also drawing other cities and villages of my country on paper.

I’m talking to thilo by messages to make Sathria’s relief / economy / roads / languages / currency… and UL203’s correspond (not to be the same, but to keep things logical).

And I have a very important question : As I started drawing cities and my country on paper, how can I reproduce them on the OGF map ?

Here you can see UL203 : http://opengeofiction.net/#map=7/31.653/33.838

And here you can see the paper map : http://hpics.li/d7bee75

I’d like to add the regions, the rivers and the highways to the OGF map.

How can I copy exactly things that I draw on the map ?

I hope you’ll understand.

I have transfered several of my paper sketches of cities and towns for Ardisphere using JOSM. I upload the .jpg or .png file under Imagery->New Picture Layer From File… then I “trace” the picture’s features (streets, river or lake shorelines, etc.) in JOSM. It’s a slow process but I like doing it that way because then as I’m tracing, I make changes too. So far, my most successful example of transfering a town designed on paper to OGF using this method is Nudae-si (http://opengeofiction.net/#map=14/-21.2010/124.5755). I don’t know if that is easy to understand - it took me a long time to learn how to use JOSM to do this, but it has been worth it.

Sorry it’s hard for me to understand what to do, I can’t find New Picture Layer From File.

You need the “PicLayer” plugin:

Thank you, my scan is now in the right place over the OGF map.

But the drawing tools of JOSM are still locked. How can I use them now ?

Do you have a data layer? Zoom in to the location where you want to edit, then select the “File -> Download data from OSM” menu.

I have started a “how to” page in the wiki:

Thank you :-), I finally found a way to edit tha map. I’m gonna draw highways, then rivers, provinces and finally detailed cities and villages that I’ve already drawn on paper.

Wonderful layout of your city clik. I too had done the same thing as what Luciano suggested while a rough draft of my city of Maaiza through a SketchUp layout. I’m so fascinated with all the cities and lands created here.
