The Morgan Waste Processing Center

(I actually finished this one a while back, but forgot to post it to the Diaries…)

The Morgan Waste Processing Center is a large landfill facility in the collaborative territory of Drevet, built mostly to service the city of Reback. It features recycling centers, landfill gas collection, vehicle maintenance garages, and admin offices.

This was my first attempt at mapping a really detailed facility, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, but would appreciate feedback. Any thoughts?

As per the Making Realistic Countries guide, I decided to finally add in a network of primary/secondary roads (not motorways, those were done earlier) to my country.

A few days later and I realize I’m kind of disappointed. The big intercity motorways seem alright, but I really didn’t know what to do with the supporting highways, and as a result they look rather unrealistic and sloppy, like they were just randomly drawn onto the map.

The Guide mentions prioritizing connections to rural areas and smaller towns, but since those two things are more or less just spread over a wide area, I’m not sure what to do other than “randomly draw roads sprawling over a wide area” - and that just comes out, again, unrealistic and sloppy.

So does anyone have any tips or examples of how to do supporting highways/roads properly?

Any general criticism on the large-scale features of my country would be appreciated as well, of course :)

Recently, I have realized that many OSM features are ignored by the standard map layer. For example, Offices and Pipelines show up in JOSM, but they are completely invisible on openstreetmap.org itself. This makes sense in OSM because these features are insignificant, and most people don’t want to see them.

However, OGF is a different case. It doesn’t have “insignificant” features. Every node, line, and area is intentionally placed by the map creator, for aesthetics and realism.

Perhaps we should edit the Mapnik rendering rules in order to allow more features to be displayed? (A quick Google search makes it sound like it wouldn’t be too hard of a task, but I haven’t done it myself, so I apologize if I am wrong.)

Particularly, it would be nice if features like Offices were displayed, since they can make up a large portion of city buildings.

Using OAuth to connect from JOSM?

Posted by dryerlint on 8 June 2016 in English.

I’ve just updated to the latest JOSM version (my old one was really outdated) and it gives the option to connect to the OGF servers with OAuth. This seems like a better option, since it doesn’t transmit your password in plain text.

However, when I click the “authorize now” button, in order to get an access token, JOSM throws an error: “The automatic process for retrieving an OAuth access token has failed.”

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you!

Editing on a large scale?

Posted by dryerlint on 18 May 2016 in English.

Hello! I’ve just gotten started with OGF about a week ago, and it looks great so far. Making small roads and buildings with the iD Editor was a lot of fun. I do have one question, though…

This guide recommends to start by making large-scale mountains and rivers. However, in iD, I can only make edits while zoomed in very close. This seems to make large features somewhat difficult; how can I work around this? I’ve tried JOSM, and it has a similar problem, as you can only download a very small slice of land.

Also, I’ve claimed a country (AN152f) but can’t seem to figure out how to rename it. None of the administrative borders are selectable in iD - they just won’t load at all. I’m sure it’s something simple that I’m missing…

Thank you!
