For a beginner, I’d definitely recommend using real islands as models. For example if you want a similarly sized island with an active volcano, you might look at Satsuma-Iojima in Japan, or Heimaey in Iceland. Or choose some other island that inspires you.
Not only will looking at a real island help you draw natural shapes and patterns, but you can also learn more about good mapping techniques, too (for example, towns are not usually covered in grass, etc). Hope this helps… happy mapping.
