I hope you are all doing well. This doesn't really pertain to any mapping, but I had ordered a real-life copy of Semerra's flag, and it just came today. It turned out amazing! I had been super bummed out about this whole quarantine thing, so bringing some extra OGF into my life really brightened my day. I'll put some pictures on my user page once the lighting is good enough!
I hope you are all doing well. I've been planning and re-planning my Ulethan country a lot during this quarantine, but I think I've finally found a plan that can stick and serve as a launchpad for the final plan of this nation. I was inspired by this image to plan out my country's topography, since it plays a significant role in the development of cities, the course of rivers, and a bunch of other things. So, I got to work. I will be the first to admit that I am not the most skilled digital artist, so the sketch I have provided is something I am quite proud of.
The light blue close to the lakes signifies a "sea level" elevation, the adjacent color references 0-100 m in height, the color next to THAT references 100-500m, and every color afterward references its own set of 500m-elevation intervals.
Here is the legend (it's too big to display on this diary entry so I just linked it lol).
Any and all feedback is much appreciated! I would most like to know how realistic you all think this topography is for a country approximately as wide as Albania is tall. I would also love suggestions on where other rivers, lakes, and minor valleys should fall given the topography.
Hope you are all staying safe. I just wanted to give everyone an update on my work in Eastern Uletha. I am currently working on an overhaul of the Semanish language, as well as planning out my capital city, since I have my mountains and rivers planned out already. The capital city started out as a trading village, but slowly grew into a city due to its isolated and strategic location on a peninsula jutting into a large lake. I'm mainly concerned about the scale of the whole project, so let me know if there's anything I need to fix.
Hope you are all doing well in this crazy time. I just had a fun idea for a game someone could make with our world map. This link has a fun clickable map quiz of the real world. I was just wondering how feasible it would be to make one of the OGF world. Any ideas?
For those of you that don't know, I recently acquired UL022h, now known as Eshemi. I have created a rough sketch of the capital city, Laenjän, which is somewhat modeled after Tallinn and Cluj-Napoca in terms of size. For those of you with well-developed, European-esque cities, how did you develop your city blocks? What is the best way to "fill the space"? Feel free to look in the edit view here to see what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance!
I would love some feedback on my new sandbox. I'm not sure if I did it right, so I would love some constructive feedback to help me improve the page. While you're in my sandbox, feel free to check out my first sandbox project!
So I decided recently to use JOSM for a massive project I've been meaning to start for a while now -- remapping Montecari to be a realistic cultural capital for Leresso. I deleted everything and started from scratch.
Here is the preliminary layout of the city so far. Make sure to go into the edit view to see where the rest of the streets will be.
A few questions about this project for the rest of the OGF community: * Is the scale accurate? If not, how should I fix this? * Does the city appear to have developed naturally? * Where should I put other important buildings (ferry terminal, airport, etc)? * Any other things I should be aware of?
Any and all feedback is encouraged. Thank you all in advance for the support.
Hello my OGF people,
I just figured out how to use JOSM (with PicLayer) well, hopefully. Take a look at my new city layout and let me know how I did.
I am so glad to be back home. I have just finished galavanting in London, Paris, and the Loire Valley in France for two weeks. The trip taught me so many valuable lessons, and inspired me to map again. Around every corner, there was a beautiful view waiting for me. I am so grateful to have gone on that trip, and I'm glad to be home. I'm never gonna forget this.
Going to the Loire Valley was extremely helpful for my mapping because I actually got to see and spend time in a SMALL town. I got to understand the way of life, where everyone knows everyone, and I think I finally understand how to map rural areas!
Feel free to ask questions about my trip. I'll be happy to answer them!
This is a question about the CONCEPT, not the MAPPING QUALITY (yet).
I asked kaanhanel, the user in charge of mapping Elmali, if Leresso and Elmali could have a sort of "cultural collision zone" where the Everian and Turquese languages and cultures collide. In Everian, it is known as Xéstohyàlarés. In Ingerish, it is known as West River Territory. I definitely think, for the sake of verisimilitude, that more areas like Xéstohyàlarés should exist in the OGF world.
What do you guys think of this small-scale collaboration concept? Any advice for kaanhanel and I moving forward in terms of developing the history of the region and mapping?
I appreciate the feedback!
I'd love some input on Beaudry, a Leressan city right between the capital of Aludres and the stylish (soon to be overhauled) city of Montecari (maybe I could have worked on Montecari for the City Sprint... guess it's too late, lol!). It's main forms of public transportation are buses and streetcars, and is home to the City University of Beaudry, one of the most prestigious institutions in the Kadmar Basin.
I'd love to know how the city looks (sprawl, mapping of downtown, etc.), and ways to improve (what to do with the port, beaches?, etc.).
Big news out of Aludres: We have a writing system for the Everian Language! How exciting!
Anyways, this is a question geared toward those REALLY talented with computers: If I wanted to somehow type my writing system, how could I create the glyphs to do so? I think this is something that could very much help move my country along!
I tried to look at the overview map and I got a message saying "Error:FORBIDDEN" from the site. The map would not load, and the message would not go away. Help!
Hmm. So, as I was looking through Commonia, I revisited a site of one of my planned projects, Cape Alhano, and found that it was overrun with a messy, unrealistic grid system. After doing more digging, I found these messy grid cities littering the Tarrion coast, even near Coast City. What should we do with them?
Hey OGF World!
So, I just saw this interesting video on clichés from countries around the world and thought "Hey, what would it be like here in the OGF world?"
So, I'm here to ask people to create a cliché from their OGF country that may or may not be true! Feel free to add it to the comments. I can't wait to see what you guys create!
Here's an example:
Leresso (my country): We drink a lot of wine (true, kind of).
OGF Community: Hey, Commonia, how's it goin'?

I feel quite stuck. A little overwhelmed. A lot, actually. I unfortunately feel as though I have lost my fiery passion for mapping that once blazed prominently. I've found myself looking at the map of this world more than contributing to it. I feel like JOSM is too scary for me to use (i'm on a macbook), and that the iD editor only permits minimal detail. I'm bad with graphic design. I feel as though there is too much work involved to make Leresso a realistic-looking country. I don't want to give it up, as I have come so far. But maybe giving it up is exactly what I need to get the fire going again. I just thought I would share this with the community of talented mappers to get advice as to where I should go. Any and all advice is welcome.
this is a semi-survey sort of diary entry where I'm trying to figure some stuff out. My question for everyone is how you guys go about making detailed mountain ranges (landuse layers to make it look realistic, number of nodes, node placement, etc.). I really hope you can all help. Comments are much appreciated!!!
Just trying to figure out what to do with my city. I'm stuck. Here are a few things I'm trying to figure out?
- how do I make it look more realistic?
- does the layout make sense?
- where should I put public transportation (airport, subway, trains, etc.)?
- how do I make the terrain more realistic?
Any and all feedback is much appreciated! Also, I am open to any NAME suggestions!!!
I would really appreciate some feedback on the airport I'm trying to detail (found here). I'm trying to figure out if I am missing any vital airport buildings, details, etc. ANY FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED!!!! I hope this signifies my turning over a new leaf in my mapping adventures as I draw towards more and more detail.
