Messy Coastal Cities in Tarrion

Posted by geoboi on 13 July 2018 in English.

Hmm. So, as I was looking through Commonia, I revisited a site of one of my planned projects, Cape Alhano, and found that it was overrun with a messy, unrealistic grid system. After doing more digging, I found these messy grid cities littering the Tarrion coast, even near Coast City. What should we do with them?

Location: Lomtonah State, AR914

Given that the user making these messy grids is currently active here, the best approach is to contact the user and discuss it directly.

I agree that it’s pretty poor mapping, and over-the-top, too.

But that’s what Commonia is for.

I would only reiterate that if you have a high quality project in mind, your best bet is to keep it to your own claimed territory or to do it in a well-managed blue or collaborative space, working with other users. Commonia isn’t that kind of place. It’s a newbie dystopia. I gave up with the place years ago, and deeply regret the time I invested there.

I will have delelted all the grid lines (backspace all the way), then redraw the grid lines. Then I will rain hell on that user who messed up that town (well, not literally).

I think I better send a proposal on how we should do about Commonia. My plans are somewhere in my mind and I just need to write on paper.

@Luciano I will not have really regretted investing there if I were you. I mean, slavaging the country is quite difficult and we just need proper planning, and whatever happens is just out of your control. Just take that you have done some efforts in clearing it up. After all, a few attempts is better than no attempts.

The grid looks alittle bit messy, but I think all it needs is get some proper zoning plans and redo its road classings.

Clearing up the whole area seems… too extreme.

My humble opinion.

How did Gobrassanya become such a nice nation and Commonia into an absolute wasteland if they’re both blue territories? How can we implement that level of organisation into Commonia just as was done in Gobrassanya?

And maybe the more experienced mappers can make their own cities/towns in Commonia as examples to new users?

Thanks, Zekiel

Because Commonia is way much larger than Gobrassanya and not so easily managed. Besides GB is largely dominated by experienced users who still come back regularly from time to time.

I have tried seeting up a page showcasing model cities in Commonia (see here) but has limited success (save the page if you want to for future ref). Besides what new user have the patience to see model ones? They may ruin these cities instead. So it does not bring advantages to bring in models.

If you have an idea on the management on Commonia you can message the admins or talk about it in the user diaries.

On a new note, there is no clear sign of any kind of organisation…… just look https://opengeofiction.net/#map=11/24.8970/150.9048.

Or maybe https://opengeofiction.net/#map=19/17.18300/139.44950. There is a Sears, Walmart, McDoncalds, and even a PetSmart.

I think it looks like we need to bring the note across of “Please don’t make real-world places here” more easily to new users.

PS GB still has it flaws such as its complex motorway system…

That Sears and Walmart are… very very small.

Very few users seem to be willing to clean up Commonia’s messes created by users who make edits for a month at most and then never come back. I try to cleanup the Watamak area, which has some decently mapped towns (Darsons, Hybrid Springs) and some pretty bad towns (the Pleamex area, at the northern end of I-306).

In my opinion, Gobrassanya should just be turned purple to prevent new users from messing it up, and it could be pointed out as a model nation to new users. Then, maybe the new users will have an idea of quality mapping, which they can take to Commonia or another blue territory.

It’s not a foolproof plan, as we could see copycat versions of Gobrassanyan cities, etc.

@magnesium,

That is ignorantly incorrect.

Here are some examples of the more realistic-looking Commonian settlements:

Comment from yoyo21 on 15 July 2018 at 21:25

@TCC most of those cities aren’t even in the Tarrion region. Vetsio is not connected to anything and randomly widens a piece of the Watamak River. @magnesium where are Holton and Wembury?

Comment from zhenkang on 16 July 2018 at 00:21

Just to add on, it seems to me that the admins are not interested in a huge revamp of Commonia, so I say for those staying in Commonia and cleaning up, although you are doing a good job, I am afraid you are wasting your time. Commonia in the future in fact I believe will just become a ‘lost country’, which still exists for new users to play around for mapping, but not as a country.

There is even a possibility that Commonia will be wiped off the map, but I am not sure if the admins will do that.

Comment from The_Cute_Chick on 16 July 2018 at 04:43

@yoyo21,

Yes, most of the settlements I listed are not in the Tarrion region. I was telling @magnesium that not only Holton and Wembury are “actually good”.

Choosing Vetsio is probably not the best example. I believe Vetsio is a small sample of a large city that some user has pasted in Commonia, which would explain the sudden end of mapping all around the settlement and even possibly the widening of the river.

Comment from yoyo21 on 16 July 2018 at 14:20

Vetsio is well mapped but very incomplete, and it doesn’t seem to have a fit in the region where it is located.

@zhenkang Why would the admins remove country status from Commonia? It doesn’t make sense to me.

Comment from yoyo21 on 23 July 2018 at 16:57

Vetsio has actually been copied into another user’s territory, and it is more complete in their territory.

Comment from The_Cute_Chick on 23 July 2018 at 17:34

@yoyo21,

Could you provide a link of Vetsio in the user’s territory? I would like to see the more complete counterpart of the settlement.

Comment from yoyo21 on 24 July 2018 at 12:21

Vetsio

Still seems a little bit incomplete but it appears to have been worked on.

Should we delete the random Commonian version of Vetsio now? It serves little purpose unconnected to the outside world.

Comment from The_Cute_Chick on 24 July 2018 at 12:55

@yoyo21,

We should delete as least as possible of any mapping in Commonia. The Commonian Vetsio can either be improved and connected to the outside world by one of us or leave it for a new user to have something as a foundation to begin mapping with.
