Montecari's getting a facelift!

Posted by geoboi on 14 August 2019 in English (English)

Hey everyone,

So I decided recently to use JOSM for a massive project I've been meaning to start for a while now -- remapping Montecari to be a realistic cultural capital for Leresso. I deleted everything and started from scratch.

Here is the preliminary layout of the city so far. Make sure to go into the edit view to see where the rest of the streets will be.

A few questions about this project for the rest of the OGF community: * Is the scale accurate? If not, how should I fix this? * Does the city appear to have developed naturally? * Where should I put other important buildings (ferry terminal, airport, etc)? * Any other things I should be aware of?

Any and all feedback is encouraged. Thank you all in advance for the support.

Yes, good start.

Scale - depends how big you want it to be. Looks ok?

Good site for a city. Old cite near the river mouth or on the peninsula, but mostly modern? Bridges are not all in the right places. Needs some detail - for realism, work bottom up.

Gotta ask - - what does it mean for bridges to be in the "right places"??

Bridges should be where needed. Not at wider points where shorter crossings are available. Not at the mouth of a river. There are also probably too many bridges over a river this wide for the size of the settlement and the grade of the road. Probably the downstream 4 should be removed.

The scales pretty great, though a few of the secondary roads could be upgraded to primary. For a city like this, I a motorway tunnel/ bridge crossing from the end of the peninsular across that isthmus could make sense (unless the old city is going to be on the peninsular itself). Its hard to find a city to compare this to, but St Petersburg https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=12/59.9370/30.3106, Belfast https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=13/54.6047/-5.9158 and Amsterdam https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=13/52.3741/4.9063. Though it equally makes sense for there to be no bridge ( Portsmouth doesn't even have a bridge crossing that tiny isthmus). As previously said, the bridge closest to the mouth and probably 2 more should be removed, but I don't think the 4th needs to be removed.

The airport can really be anywhere on the periphery of the city, though for a city of your size, it can only have 2 runways, 3 terminals max. Only 1 runway probably makes most sense. I've seen far too many oversized airports in the OGF world. The ferry terminal can also be anywhere. I think the more important question for an old city like this is where the main railway hub is going to be, and how the railway will be going through the city. I'd expect the railway to go to the port and I'd expect there to be quite a lot of railway lines.
