Feedback Please!

Hello everyone,

I've been mapping in my territory Ablecia for a little while now. My main area of focus has been the city of Newbyford in the North West of the country, along with some smaller towns and villages I have created between the city and the Montgomery Wood area.

Anyone with a few minutes to spare, I would happily take on any feedback about my mapping, along with any constructive criticisms you may have!

Many thanks :)

Hello from a semi-nearby neighbor to the southeast.

I'm sorry I didn't see this yesterday; I'm sure many others are in this boat. One thing I will mention is to give it a bit of time. If there's a week and no response or the post gets pushed down to another page, then I can understand the repost.

That said, here are a couple things I really like:

A couple questions:

  • Is Newbyford on a mountain or plateau? Most communities are not built with long, swirling streets unless they are late 20th-century suburbs or forced into such because of the terrain. For example, why doesn't M40 connect directly to Main Street anywhere near here? It seems like M40 is trying to be a major cross-town artery. If so, why doesn't it really connect to anything? Does the terrain prohibit it like Bigelow Boulevard in Pittsburgh?

  • Where are the nearby towns and cities? This doesn't mean I'm wondering why the map is blank. What I'd like to know is to what other cities does Newbyford connect to. Even on small, mountainous islands, you can follow the main streets as they fan out to connect other settlements. Everything in Newbyford loops back into itself. We should see roads that head outward and are relatively continuous outward toward places like Anderson, Leardon, and Hutford/Lake Cindy. This is especially true with a potential connection toward Gosburg (via Udä) in your western neighbor, Älgert.

  • Lastly, I like how you've thought about the detail of the types of businesses and services you need in the city. Remember to keep buildings a few meters away from the way that marks the highway. Think of that way as the center line of the road and not the curb, so you'll need about 5–10 meters depending on how many lanes you have and size of sidewalks. Hope this helps!

Hey Alessa,

Thank you for the great feedback! This is exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate your compliments and have also taken into account some of the comments you made about the terrain and how it affects the road system. I think my main area of concern now is that I need to start mapping some natural features before I continue to evolve my city. I'm also going to start expanding the main roads outwards to connect to other areas, as you suggested.

Thanks again!
