Started the first city in the country, any tips for realism?
Posted by tule00 on 11 June 2015 in English.About
The city is called Mutstat (Mouth City/Confluence City) and is located here. I have created a little bit of the downtown, and Mutstathafen, the harbour city.
Any tips?
I need tips for realism, so please tell me if you think I should change or add something. I need your help! Thanks in advance

I think you have scale problems. If Mutstahafen is supposed to be a district within a city then that city is quite out of scale and the areas probably need to be closer together. The blocks in downtown Mutstat are a little too large but almost right. Your interchanges are actually at normal scale. Your highway’s curves aren’t smooth. Don’t worry about this problem because when I started mapping I had (And sometimes still) these problems. You’ll get used to mapping and your skills will improve over time.

The harbour is not optimal. Modern ships are 200 m and longer - how they shall reach the quai in the edge? There is only a landing for small fishing-boats.
In your city you need some central places, main roads, churches, a townhall, a theater, an opera, great stores, some small parks (“squares”) and a lot of other things. It is never done only with a simply grid of roads - too in America.

Mutstathafen is more like a satellite city, than a normal district. I made bigger city blocks there (500x500) than in the city (150x150) because Hafen was just a port, and later grew into a city, so it is about 150-100 yrs old, as opposed to Mutstat, which is 250 yrs old. I will try to fix the highways, since this is supposed to be possibly the largest urban area in Reeland, and one of the largest in the world (8 000 000 inhabitants)

So, i need a bigger port. Thanks for the advice. In America it is the grid of roads because it is 200 yrs old. Mutstat is a bit older, so i will try to make it better.
Thanks to both for advices!

Hey, i would really like to stress histor’s comment about adding… “things” into your city. Of course one needs to work out a street system, but also don’t neglect what “functions” you want each city quarter to serve. As far as I see you have already ddecided where to put the harbour; no, think about things like central train stations, nightlife, business centres, uni, richer and poorer neighbourhoods, where to have dense housing, where to have historic parts of town etc. Also, I don’t know if you’ve already seen it, but this guide http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Making_realistic_cities should also really help. Happy mapping!

Yeah, scale is an issue. 500m is too far for a block, even in a new town. What is the landuse in Mutstathafen? Residential, business, industrial? Nobody wants a house right next to a port and airport, unless they are really hard up.
Almost all ports have a surface rail connection and a considerable area of land for sidings, storage, offices etc.
Also, really not sure about the airport runway facing the harbour. The combination of ships, cranes and low-flying aircraft surely can’t fill passengers with confidence, and a crash could be disastrous - eg aircraft overshoots a wet runway and slams into a ship filled with fuel oil and flammable cargo. It wouldn’t be permitted in most states. The other issue here is that you’ve got one single-carriageway road as the only access to an ‘international airport’, a presumably busy port and the eastern side of town. Expect nearly round-the-clock traffic jams.

I guess you are right. Looks like i need more imagination. About the wiki page, I have seen it a few times. Everytime I see it, I’m like “Oh no, I can’t do it”. My city is supposed to be like London, a bit older than New York, with a harbor like Piraeus. A very complicated idea.

I live in such a new part of the city, 70 yrs old, with 500 m blocks. But yeah, its port, airport and residential zones are far from one another. I seem to make everything the easy way, not the realistic way. Thanks.
So: i need to
Thanks to both, again! These were exactly the kind of advices I wanted.

BTW, the road to Hafen is not single carriageway. It is a motorroad/expressway. I should just make it longer.
