Hello everyone,
I’ve started a new city near Vumrupstat, the province capital in Oberlant. It’s located here.
As opposed to other cities I’ve mapped, this time i tried not to hurry, to work on a small area until it looks good (instead of trying to finish a large area quickly).
Also, I am trying to focus on small details, such as bus/tram stops and individual buildings.
In general, I will do the city slowly and without hurries, but try to focus on every detail and make everything as realistic as possible.
What are your thoughts/suggestions, what should I add or change, what do you like and what do you not like? I’d like to know what you think.
Regards

It takes forever if you decide to delve into doing buildings too! But does have a certain satisfaction…

Of course they’re nowhere near done - needing all the “culture” added in.

I agree - doing buildings is not at all easy - and I don’t really think I’ll do every single building in the city (at least not anytime soon), but that’s my goal with the city - to make it look like an average well-mapped city in OSM. Not at all easy, but I’ll do my best.

I am trying about this challenge of detailing some of my cities and towns too.
As I, at least, finished the street maps, I am detailing in Paranabi, Cariocas and Bhagurah, Goytakanya. I did not finished the street grids in Rugenia but I try using so much building as possible.
Yeah, it is a hard work, hehehe
Good mapping, Tule00!!!

In my cities I try to draw the important buildings (town hall, library, stadium, etc) but not every building. I think I’d go crazy if I tried that, haha. But whatever works for you… it looks like a really good start, and it’s a great idea to take it slow and focus on detail. :-) Cheers,

As by isleño in my mapping important buildings get its own and individual shape. Normal residential areas are only grey. It is a pity, that OSM (and so OGF) has only the grey for residential areas - for a good mapping there should be different colours or patterns for different density of urbanisation. In few areas I set a number as “name” in the residential block. That means the number of levels in the houses (1 - only ground floor, 3 - ground floor and 2 levels, 5 - ground floor and 4 levels and so on)
Only at areas with great houses in great gardens all houses are drawn and get some housenumbers. Too all houses, who exists in the wiki (p.e. for biographies), get it’s individual shape and a housenumber.
Indeed it looks very good, to draw all houses. But it is an hard work.
Good looking too ist - as tule00 did - to draw all tracks of the railway-lines and the streetcar-lines.
As Liciano and others too I draw all tracks and platforms of the metro-lines. This made the lines more realistic in radius and gradient at junctions.

Very ambitious, a really good start! Like Isleño and Histor, I try to draw only important buildings. And I’m using your same method - slowly but surely - to create my new country Østermark much more realistically than I did Wiwaxia. In my capitol city Mynninghamn, I’ve done tram stops but not bus stops - yet - and I’m planning on going through and adding more traffic lights, more rail crossings, more one-way streets. And I’m trying to avoid the city being too grid-like.
Biggest challenges in building the city: balance of streets to green stuff, putting in realistic peculiarities of street layout, making realistic suburbs, getting in all the power stations, water treatment plants, other infrastructure, how big the actual city w/o suburbs should be. Just to name a few things ;-)

Demuth, I must admit that your attempt to create Østermark a very detailed and realistic country, is successful so far. Mynninghamn is a city with very much to learn from. :)

as Demuth wrote: Infrastructure needs a lot of place, namely parking areas near shopping malls or stadiums, water treatments, prisons, railway service, streetcar-depots, cemeteries and other necessary items.

Looking good! But maybe another way to map is to start with hamlets and villages e.g. here at Pŭnkrąt, slowly to build up to bigger things. That is a way to go go slow and focus on detail. Just a thought.
