Just now I went to the OGF site to view the results of some edits I did last night - and found the entire continent of Archanta flooded! Oh no!

I don’t see how I could have done this, since I didn’t edit the coastline at all. Yet I have to consider the possibility that I am somehow responsible. The reason I think that is that in the server version of the map, the entire coastline of my country, Orlenna is missing, while neighboring countries still have their coastlines.

However, I have no idea how that could have happened. I opened my local copy of the area in JOSM, which should be in sync with what I uploaded last night, and the coastline is still there.

On the other hand, the coastline of Commonia is also gone, so maybe someone’s editing in that region caused the problem?

Anyway, I’m sorry if I did this, and will be happy to help repair the damage (though I don’t yet know how).

PS: Shouldn’t Ingerish be one of the language options for this forum? ;-)

Update: actually, I guess the entire coastline of Archanta is gone. When I said the neighboring countries still have their coastlines, I was actually seeing the ocean-facing borders; I’ve defined a border extending beyond my coastline, while my immediate neighbors have not.

Hm, thought I was done for the night, but apparently not.

I was just wondering: I would like to have shipping lines running from Orlenna to several other places, e.g. Khaiwoon, Villa Constitución, Phoenix, Elegantia … do I need to ask permission of the owners of those places to enter their harbors, or should I just go ahead and do it?

Well, I suppose I should introduce myself. I’ve been here about a month, but have been pretty quiet up to now.

I’ve been a map geek all my life, but for some reason have never really done anything with online mapping before. But here I am, and I’m greatly enjoying this little adventure.

I have established the country of Orlenna, at the western end of the southern part of Archanta continent. Come visit - the weather’s nice! Be sure to visit the legendary Citadel of Samman Wey (uh, well, I haven’t actually mapped that yet, but it will be there soon - and perhaps discerning individuals will be able to guess where it is supposed to be), and try some Brandeia wine - it’s the world’s finest (in our humble opinion ;-) )

By the way, it has occurred to me that it might be a good idea to have an OpenGeofiction tutorial. I know there is extensive documentation on the OpenStreetMap site, but I think that even though we use the same tools, there are some fundamental differences in the process: in particular, I don’t think people working on OSM do very much drawing, and certainly not over long distances - and the easy-to-use web-based editors reflect that. Whereas here we are creating whole cities and countries from scratch, and it’s really pretty awful trying to draw, say, a 500-mile railroad in iD or even Potlatch. So I think among other things, newcomers to OGF should be encouraged to learn JOSM as soon as possible, and a tutorial would help with that. I might be able to write such a document, though I don’t have very much free time just now.
