So about a week ago I posted on here after I joined, saying I was making my first town. I decided to give a little update.
First of all, I came up with a name idea. I was thinking of calling the town Furstrade. It’s a play on words, since it’s my first town, and it was built there as sort of a trade center (see my first post). You could also think of it being a town where furs were traded a lot.
My thinking for the layout of the town is to have a commercial area over in between the river and highway. (see map) I’ve already got that mapped out, aside from the actual buildings. Historically, this used to be an area where people would do a lot of trading between the other towns that were along the same river, and over time, it was slowly replaced with modern commercial buildings.
To the right of the motorway, is the residential area. I’m currently in the process of mapping this. Historically (I really like the idea of this having a somewhat detailed history, if you can’t tell :P) people who were dealing with a lot of the trade here decided to build houses over here, so they wouldn’t have to travel so far every day. These houses were kind of built somewhat randomly, though. When this was being modernized, the local government was on a bit of a tight budget, and so they decided to keep it relatively random. So the streets will be a bit nonuniform.
Finally, below the residential area on the other side of the river, will be the government area. This will be relatively small, and have things like the town hall and such, and maybe a small park.
Let me know what you think of this so far. If you have any tips or suggestions on things I should maybe do a bit differently (since I’m new here) feel free to tell me.
Wow, I spent way longer writing this than I should have…

Well, if a week has passed already since you joined, I think you can ask for your own territory.

Well you could map a bit more

I know I can start mapping my own territory, but I don’t want to yet. I want to finish this town so I have a good amount of experience with mapping before I move on to my own territory. I don’t like the idea of leaving a half-finished town behind with no way for anyone to know what the plans were for it.

I just want to say that I appreciate you making sure you learn and improve before getting your own territory. Very few new mappers seem to understand the importance of learning the ropes like that (myself included a few years ago. XD)
That being said, if you’d like some help making Furstrade more realistic, and others I’m sure would be interested in helping with tips as well. I’d also recommend looking at the Making Realistic Cities page. It will help you figure out how to make the mapping fit with your mind, and it should really help perfect the already rich history idea you have for the area. It will probably also help to look at other nearby towns and cities and/or compare to real cities on OSM to get an idea of scale and mapping styles.
I say that all as just some friendly tips since you seem like you truly want to get experience and make great stuff. :) I appreciate your openness to advice and your understanding of the importance of learning and improving! Have a great day and enjoy mapping!
Sincerely,
Ernestpcosby

Happy mapping! Actually which continent you want your territory to be In the future.
Add a hospital and a university to the town. Then a place for entertainment. Maybe a small airport?

Also I saw that the town is along a boundary. Maybe move the boundary over the town? Because it is weird to have a town along a boundary.

I wouldn’t build an airport. For such a small island, there are already enough airports.

Ernestpcosby:
I have already looked at that tutorial, actually, and I am following it. (although somewhat loosely) Thanks for the advice though! ## zhenkang: I couldn’t entirely understand that first sentence there, but it seems like you’re asking me what continent I want my territory to be in in the future. Honestly, I haven’t started thinking about that at all. Adding a hospital, university, etc. seems like a good idea, although they might be kinda small. As for the airport, like MrOobling said, I don’t think I want to build an airport here. There’s already enough and it doesn’t really fit in with the purpose of the town. Also, for the boundary thing, I wasn’t exactly sure if I was allowed to move boundaries, so I kind of forgot about it.

You are allowed to, it is a blue territory. Otherwise ask the administration to clarify.
Soryy for the 1st sentence. I was using a phone and I can’t type well.
