After my precedent diary entry, I’ve created a discord server for those who want to interact with my nation

EDIT : the link is no longer valid, since this seems to be a somewhat sensitive subject, that wasn’t my goal at all. The discod will stay private from now on. If you want to interact with Vilvetia, use PM and we’ll continue on discord / PM or wiki when I’ll have made more progress

You know, considering what happened last time somebody created a Discord (short form: started well, then turned less productive until drama happened and the server closed down), this doesn’t seem like a good idea.

I think we need to have a platform like this. Its sad that there was a drama, i think the biggest problem is the age difference between us all, but we need to find a good way to communicate easier… Not only like in this case between me and Eretra, there should be a new new start in this Topic!

I think a great idea would be if everyone would make a discord for his own land and we would have a list for everyone? would this be an idea?

I don’t know what happened before, but this one is for my country and it’s internationals relations, so we’ll try to keep it civil but I will have the last word, since at the end it’s me who’ll be mapping

I will open up a discord for Skalenia, you can ask all things about Skalenia, including how in 1953, 18% of the country’s revenue came from guano, another word for bird poop.

Yes it will be better if we just set a some special platform for our own nations. I wonder if we can do that for the blue and purple (especially FS) nations. Of course, must be set up by the cooordinators and admins themselves.

Discord and other chat platforms are not recommended, for a wide range of reasons:

  • They may necessitate software that might not be accessible to everyone.
  • They may require users to create and manage yet another account.
  • They may make our confusing array of communication tools even harder to navigate.
  • They may draw discussions away from our forum, making it less active and less interesting.
  • They may draw information away from our wiki, making such information harder to find.
  • They may be significantly more prone to arguments and other drama.
  • They may easily be dominated by the least mature, most “bored” users.
  • They may demand more intensive moderation than forums.
  • They may be more distracting and time-consuming than forums.
  • They may be harder to participate in for those with limited English skills.

Yeah but this time is rather more specific to one nation, though of course these can actually be done on the wiki talk page itself.

Sometimes because of these problems, we are stuck in what we should do.

Ideally, discussions specific to one nation should take place on the wiki talk page for that nation, where they will be accessible to the whole community.

That’s why we have the inbox messaging system within the website. Yes, a discord for OGF would be useful, but I would honestly suggest that it be within a few countries rather than the whole. I do agree with different arguments of both sides and I really do hope that an agreement or compromise can be reached. I have already shared my proposal, so that’s that I guess.

Im sorry to say this, but i think the communication on OGF is really bad. Of courswe we have the User Diaries and the E-mail thingy but i think we need something like a chat, to get in toutch with other nations. And in my opinion the Wiki talk page is really complicated.

My Suggestion: Every Nation would have a own discord, a link would be on the wikipage of the nation (e.g under the Tag of “Support”). It would be also useful to have small groups for archipelago or other small regions.

What do you think guys? I definitly think there should be a change in communication on OGF happy mapping Lars

The wiki talk-page is fine medium to discusse things belonging to the land or town or whatever the wiki-page desribes. I have no meaning for too much different places for OGF-discussions.

when we have > wiki > forum > user diaries > direct messages > user talk pages > article talk pages > Twitter > Facebook

what we don’t have is instant messaging because OGF is not the kind of project that needs it. It is a slow, purposeful project, not a RPG.

I really dont know what happend, perhaps it would be helpful to know this? (of course no names!) Eretra an me had interesting discussions on discord, so i think small groups arent that bad…

Who should manage all of those country-specific Discord channels? From my perspective, I have neither time nor interest to follow a channel for my country at all. There are enough places to deposit specific suggestions about anything. We have a forum now, we have wiki discussion pages…

There is absolutely no need in any live communication for a project like OGF. Things need to take time. The last time Discord was tested, in a community country, people (including me) started to discuss and edit matters “on the fly”. This turned out to be a very bad idea because when two people think a change to something might be necessary, it might not be the meaning of the rest of the community. This is not the way OGF should be like.

If there are people meeting offside, it is totally okay if they organize it themselves. However, I think it is a good idea to not actively promote any form of live communication for OGF.

Actually, we just need to effectively bring the message across to others instead of trying to find better forms of communication. I think now what we should do is simplify our forms of communication instead of introducing more typyes to make our world complicated.

On the contrary, the forums are pretty active, but only for topics that are pretty interesting.
