The City of Lafort

Posted by FancyFoxy on 30 July 2018 in English.

I’ve been working on a new city for a little bit of time now. Lafort is supposed to be a mostly urban city, with some regions of suburbs. The central region inside Lafort Boulevard and Coast Road is the first region to be developed, and acts as a “downtown” region. It is a major city of Peaceland, and its population is around 400,000. It’s incomplete in many areas, but I want some advice on what I should add and what I need to fix.

motorways, motorways … The motorway-bow over the islands is the first candidate to delete. And why an very sharp railway-curve from the station to the industry? And you will really have your airport in the middle of you 400 000 inhabitants?

What I like is your sea-bridge (Oceanview Path)

@histor: Thanks for the advice, though I’m not sure what you meant with the airport question.

The airport is only 4 km from your city-center. If you will have 400.000 inhabitants, you need some place for them. So seen the airport is to near - and the people in your town are very angry about the loudness.

@Histor sometimes in small countries or terrirories like Singapore and Hong Kong the airport is only 2km from the nearest town. But for this case, I have to agree that the airport is slightly way too near. Make use of the space!

Seriously, also consider adding farms and forests. Your country, not just your city, needs some greenery. How can there be peace without forests and nature?

The factory (“Energy Center”, also the name is just pathetic, please accurately describe what energy) is only 3km from downtown. I agree with Histor on the motorway thing: Some ferry would be enough for these small islands.

Now you should be planning residential areas and actual businesses inside the buildings.

Nice so far, with realistic grid and details like mall, park etc. Keep up adding interesting features: hotels, cafés, offices and museums! Remember to add schools, kindergartens and other basic services.

Before building the city too tight, leave enough space for greenfields, sports arenas, industrial areas and other facilities that require more space. In a city of 400 000 inhabitants, majority of them would realistically be located 3-4 km from city center, between the central area and outer suburbs.

Note that motorways are one-way as default, because they usually occur as two parallel tracks, one for each direction. Be sure to remove the one-way tag or map a second track in the other direction. Considering the planned size of the city, I would downgrade some of the motorways into trunk roads or primary roads – and avoid long, expensive bridges!

Happy mapping! :)

In my home town [Turku] (osm.org/search?query=tampere#map=11/60.4362/22.2995) with 200 000 inhabitans, a motorway bypass across the islands in the west was planned in the 1960s but never built. Today, everyone is terrified by the mere idea, it would have ruined the beautiful archipelago. Consider this when you plan the road system! :)

The link points wrong, my apologies. Turku is here: osm.org/search?query=turku#map=11/60.4481/22.2494
