Rails Port Open. Happy Mapping!

Posted by Luciano on 29 August 2021 in English (English). Last updated on 4 September 2021.

Let’s give this a try.

The rails port seems to be performing okay. So if you want to sign in and try mapping, go ahead and visit the lost password recovery page:

https://opengeofiction.net/user/lost-password

You will get an email with your new password. Reset it and start mapping.

Please note the wiki remains “closed” - you can look at it, but no general editing will be permitted, for at least another week, while we get things organized.

Meanwhile, welcome to our new servers.

Our email server is not yet fully functional for incoming messages, therefore please message using the OGF messaging system or send me an email at luciano(↻)geofictician.net . If I’m swamped with questions, I might take a while to get to yours, however.

Several common problems:

  1. A bright red “ActionController…” error. Or else the site keeps logging you out. This is nothing to panic about. It’s a “stale cookie” problem and can be resolved by patient refreshes of your browser cache (control-F5) or maybe trying to open our site in an incognito window. Annoying. How to fix is unclear, so far.

  2. Slow load on map render. This will happen for any region where you’re the first visitor. It will pick up speed as more people visit various spots on the map.

  3. Oauth seems weird, wrong data, etc. Delete and revoke any old Oauth applications, authorizations and tokens attached to your account, and make new ones. Oauth is working fine, they just need to be generated on the new server rather than inherited from the old one.

tis workin

Comment from Icefur2 on 29 August 2021 at 23:46

When I edit, it uses OSM’s id editor instead of OGF’s. Will it change back or is it permanently using OSM’s id?

Comment from Luciano on 29 August 2021 at 23:52

@icefur2

The iD editor is exactly OSM’s default iD editor. For now, we will keep it this way. It’s newer, and much, much easier to keep up-to-date and upgraded.

In the distant future, we might look into creating a fork of the iD editor specific to OGF. The old iD editor wasn’t really customized for OGF - it just seemed different because if was very old.

thank you admins!!

The Earth-carto layer is showing the real earth instead of the OGF universe now?

Comment from suburbandecay on 30 August 2021 at 04:38

Congratulations admin team on your work - it is to your credit that we’ve seen minimal downtime with such a huge project.

I imagine Luciano is working on a fix, but with thanks our old friend inspect element we can return the OGF carto layer to iD by adding the following as a custom layer:

https://tiles04.rent-a-planet.com/ogf-carto/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png

Just need a new authentication URL for JOSM and then I’m set :)

Thank you all for your hard work over this weekend, but also thank you in advance for all your hard work going forward!

Comment from Ernestpcosby on 30 August 2021 at 10:22

Thank you for the hard work and congrats on a successful move!

I was going to ask, is the Scale Helper tool going to be brought back up with the new server? It currently seems to be broken, at least with any old links.

I’ve noticed the backgrounds seem to be all based on RL Earth: is there any way that we can get the background to be based on the OGF theme we are using? Or do we have to manually add that ourselves?

Comment from Luciano on 30 August 2021 at 20:27

@Luziyca

For now, I have posted instructions on adding background (imagery) for both JOSM and iD on my User page on the wiki.

https://wiki.opengeofiction.net/index.php/User:Luciano

Once the FAQ is refactored, that info will be available there.

I can easily log in to see my mail - or comment here - but logging in to edit does not work (well once in about 20 times ;-( And when I’m logged in to see my mail I seem to need a second log-in to map, which fails again….

Marcello.

Absolutely great work, thank you all!

Comment from Luciano on 31 August 2021 at 14:23

@Marcello,

I’m not completely sure what you mean “mail” - are you meaning the OGF messaging system?

As mentioned in the original diary post:

A bright red “ActionController…” error. Or else the site keeps logging you out. This is nothing to panic about. It’s a “stale cookie” problem and can be resolved by patient refreshes of your browser cache (control-F5) or maybe trying to open our site in an incognito window. Annoying. We are working to solve this problem. It has multiple causes, and diagnosis and cure will take some time. Meanwhile, it doesn’t in fact prevent you from using the site - it’s mostly an annoyance: it logged me out twice while I was posting this comment, so it’s a problem for me, too!

Please accept our apologies.

@Luciano

Are you crazy ? Apologizing ? I have worked 25+ years in IT and I have had all the mod cons connected: telephones at 02:00, 24-hour working days, really bad coffee. I value your efforts to keep OGF up to date and really appreciate it.

Marcello.

Comment from Marcello on 31 August 2021 at 17:38

Huh ? That posted immediately ? Er, I did not expect this ;-)

Anyway, ‘my’ issue was that I could log in using ‘login’ (top right) and acces my mail, but not edit using ‘edit’ (top left). But when I was logged in, I could not edit - that required a second login which failed 90% of times…

Again, you don’t now half how much I applaud your efforts to keep the OGF community up-to-date,

Marcello.

Comment from Eevee on 31 August 2021 at 22:37

@Marcello

I haven’t tried editing online but try refreshing the log in page (Ctrl+F5) every time before logging in. For me it solves most of the problems when trying to log in. However if I don’t do that every time, it doesn’t work.

Comment from Eevee on 31 August 2021 at 22:39

Sidenote: Posting the comment also logged me out…

Comment from Eevee on 31 August 2021 at 23:44

By the way, is it supposed to be so that we don’t see old changesets when clicking the History link at the top? I only see changesets made after the server change. The same thing is true when I check my own changesets from my profile, only new ones will be shown (the number in profile includes the old ones though)

Comment from GibranalNN on 1 September 2021 at 06:55

@Luciano

Are there changes in the OGF tile for JOSM usage?

Comment from Marcello on 1 September 2021 at 09:08

Good news there:

I have JOSM working with just changing my password. I use basic authentication, not Oauth, by the way. Even the last edits (I bookmark them for easier location) were okay.

O bliss ;-)

Marcello.

Comment from Luciano on 1 September 2021 at 11:43

@Eevee

Yes, unfortunately pre-migration changesets are “defective”. They exist, but they don’t belong to anyone, which means they won’t show in a specific user’s or the general history correctly.

This was difficult decision but it saved us a lot of space in the database by dropping all this extra data, which means OGF can have space to grow, moving forward.

OGF is different than OSM because the “churn” (the constant changing of things) in OGF is much higher than in OSM. That is hard on the database. On the old OGF server, something like 70% of the database was “history”. That’s a lot of disk space.

@GibranalNN - as mentioned before in earlier comment:

Comment from JSanchez on 1 September 2021 at 11:52

Hi All! First of all, thanks to all of you who make this possible and for this migration! I am experiencing issues on my laptop to view OGF - only the Earth-Carto layer displays data, whilst the others just remain grey. It is weird, as I can view the data on my phone, for example. Have you experienced this? Do you know if this is just temporary, just a matter of time? I have lost the URL to connect to OGF from Potlach, do you have it? Again, thanks :) Jorge

Comment from Luciano on 1 September 2021 at 12:04

@JSanchez

Sounds like you need to flush the cache on your browser. That’s easy: control-F5. Or… well, sometimes your ISP needs to flush their upstream cache, instead. That’s more frustrating - you just have to wait.

I spend a lot of time pressing control-F5. This was true before migration, too. My F5 button is one of the most worn out buttons on my keyboard.

Comment from JSanchez on 1 September 2021 at 13:16

@Luciano Thanks, I was on a VPN and logging out worked fine for me! Could you please tell me the URL to edit with Potlatch? Looking fwd to mapping…

Comment from Luciano on 1 September 2021 at 14:08

@JSanchez

I didn’t know anyone was using Potlatch. I guess there’s a desktop version, nowadays?

I have to assume that Potlatch uses the same api as JOSM.

The opengeofiction api has not changed:

https://opengeofiction.net/api

If that doesn’t work, then Potlatch is weird and I will have to research.

Comment from Luciano on 1 September 2021 at 14:11

@JSanchez

Note that you need to reset your password, if you haven’t done that. Perhaps that’s the issue you’re seeing?

https://opengeofiction.net/user/lost-password

Comment from Marcello on 1 September 2021 at 19:08

oh man,

Issues again ;-(

@Luciano: do you know that Potlatch is now on version P3?

https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=60263&p=4

I have no clue about the technicalities. I stopped using it.

kind regards,

Marcello.

Comment from JSanchez on 2 September 2021 at 10:42

Potlatch has been working pretty well for me in the last months, but I have not been able to edit much lately and I cannot find the info on how to configure it… I remember there was an FAQ that did solve my issue: map data server, overview tile server, etc. (the same article for JOSM, I think) Perhaps you guys can direct me to that article and I can give it a try? Thanks a lot @Luciano and @Marcello

When will backups be available again?

Comment from Luciano on 2 September 2021 at 16:31

@skquinn

Backups have been available all along. The link from the dashboard works, and the https://opengeofiction.net/backups shortcut works too.
