Territory request and censorship

Posted by Panzerbyte on 14 December 2018 in English (English)

The last couple of weeks, people who spoke out about the territory requests taking some time, were silenced (posts removed, comments deleted). I have been waiting to receive a territory for a month now, and that makes me wonder what is going on, nothing more. Hereby, I hope that this diary entry will survive, and hope that we (the ones waiting for their territory) will get some reassurance in getting our piece of land soon.

Comment from Yuanls on 14 December 2018 at 23:06

The diary entries tend to get cluttered with easily-solvable issues such as these. Perhaps the users who complained were eventually given territories and so their posts were deleted because they were redundant.

This is a diary, not a GitHub Issue; I am letting my thoughts be heard here.

Sometimes it doesnt hurt to ask the admins directly one more time.

"Nobody has ever died waiting for an imaginary territory. " - words to be attributed to a local demiurge...

That said, I can say that admins are aware of ALL pending requests. I am not currently handling these, however.

I would recommend NOT re-requesting (nor pestering with diary entries, etc.). Speaking from having held the job of granting territories in the past, personally, I feel that impatient "customers" will only create negative feelings and de-motivate admins, who are only volunteers, you know.

Use your waiting time doing sonething interesting in a "free to edit " blue country. Bear in mind that it is not difficult to move whole cities to your own territory once you receive one, using JOSM. So make a great city in Commonia and take it with you when you move!

Actually, I will suggest while waiting for your nation, plan for it. Imagine the geography, the cities, the roads etc. Planning ahead also helps your for nation as well. If you like also plan relations with your future neighbours, your nation's history and how it will fit your neigjbourhood etc.

@Luciano. I can understand about people pestring people for what they want, but this is what people naturally do... i honestly wonder (no offence) whether the admin team needs expansion. You need to put this suggestion in the FAQ.

I don't know why it is taking so much time for you to get your territory. You have been waiting for a month, while I waited for less than 2 weeks and got replied. @Luciano may I start editing my territory?

I am not currently active as admin. I am only a mapper. But I know they are working on it. Please don't assume you've been granted a territory unless you've received official notification confirming the grant. One of the issues is resolving the fact that multiple users requested the same territory.

Please don't imagine there is some grand conspiracy. This is a tiny site run by hobbyists who do it - and pay for hosting as well, mind - in their spare time as volunteers. Nobody has been paid to be your servant, and new users should be patient and grateful that they are allowed to participate. If you want instant gratification the rest of the internet waits to serve you.

@Drogda 3 moths? you are member since the 4th of October, minus one week is about two months.

So, as @Sarepava and @Luciano already said, use the time to improve your mapping skills, reflect on your planning, also don't forget to think about the landscape, rivers, mountains, ....

Drogda, you sent "Why you bully me" to me the other day, after i'd made a bit of tidy up on Lonawai Island. This tidy up was across the board, not aimed at you specifically. However I do think it's where you could improve your mapping - this is a small group of islands, mapping should be compatible with that. It shouldn't be loads of roads, motorways and infeasibly long bridges. That would be a good investment ahead of getting your own territory.

Sometimes you are also free to sign up for a collaborative project. These are marked purple on the overview map. See OGF:Collaboration Projects for details.

@capelow I think there is not a much chance for you to get such a big territory...

Hide this comment

Comment from capelow on 20 December 2018 at 21:21

@Arisuaq it's not that big ("big" territories have special marker that says they are only for advanced users, UL156 doesn't have it).

Comment from capelow on 20 December 2018 at 21:22

@Arisuaq also, i would map this territory with a friend (and maybe work with some other OGF users in a limited cooperation country).

If you can point to "best of the best" edits then I think it'll make the admin's life easier. Think of that. "Here's what i've done that meets all you's guidlines and how tos"

If it's not meeting OGF:Making realistic cities or OGF:Making realistic countries then it makes it very hard for an admin to simply nod it on...

Remember, you're playing in their den.

I also have the same issue. I've been waiting 2 months for AR-140 and nothing yet.

Not even a decline.

@Arisuaq yes I meant AN140. But, why the heck would it take 2 months? The admins wouldn't take a full 2-month break and leave the site unprotected that long.

Comment from Rhiney boi on 31 December 2018 at 16:58

I have to agree with Fox Tails. However, there might be a conflict with two different people wishing to claim the same territory. If this was the case, I would wish for the admins to reach out to the involved parties instead of sleeping on it.

First off, best wishes to all for 2019!

Secondly, playing Devil's Advocate... I imagine it can take a reasonable amount of time for an Admin to look through a users edits, to see if they're ready to take on their own territory. I've not looked in detail at the history for the users above, but did notice some with very few edits. It's a bit much to complain when you've get fewer than 100 edits.

What might make it much easier is if you put together a showcase to present to the admins? Say a 1km sq area where you edit in high detail, demonstrating that you comprehend the information at Portal:User Help and Resources and are capable of good high-quality mapping?

I'd be happy to assist users to do this - feedback and help - in the blue or purple countries.

(and as an aside - I do have a small country, but have basically done all my OGF editing in the blue & purple countries)

Hmmmm...

You can directly check people's edits, and see what they did. It should only take a couple hours at most to do that.

At this point, I've been waiting for 3 months.

The last time the territories were updated was June 3rd, and the general admin stopped editing around that time too, so I think the general admin was fired and they're looking for a new one.

There is no general admin; the admin power is shared between 3 users - Thilo, Isleno and Luciano.

Fox Trails, you have 34 edits. Thirty-four edits.

Even if the admins had an embarrassment of free time, you've given them nothing to look at.
