Earlier, when parts of the map and higher zoomed in levels were still loading, the newly added directions feature was working just fine, but now it doesn’t seem to want to work. It keeps saying “Couldn’t find a route between those two places”. Anyone else having this problem?

Ooh yes, I just logged on and would’nt find directions from city to city.
Comment from ilikemaps on 23 April 2017 at 02:45
yeah it doesn’t work for me either
Comment from skquinn on 23 April 2017 at 03:47
Once it’s working, this will be a great feature to have. I am sure it’s a relatively simple fix, especially if it was working briefly.
Comment from ilikemaps on 23 April 2017 at 07:04
seems to be working for me now
Comment from martinum4 on 23 April 2017 at 07:07
It should work again now, for the exact cause look at my comment under the maintenance diary entry…
Also, if it doesn’t find a route, check if the roads share nodes, it doesn’t work when they aren’t connected. Another cause is maybe that it was a recent edit, i only generate the routing graph once daily, and due to the fact that’s described in the other comment i can’t provide an up-to-date routinggraph right now.
Example route that works: http://api.opengeofiction.net/directions?engine=osrm_car&route=11.9795%2C2.8685%3B11.9185%2C2.7475#map=14/11.9491/2.8100
Unfortunately it doesn’t geocode the coordinates again after you moved the nodes, but that’s just a minor issue.
Kind Regards
Martin

P.S.: Foot and bike routing will be provided later this year.

This is such a ‘small’ thing but it’s so cool, it makes the OGF experience even more realistic! 💚 Thank you for this

Nice tool - but works sometimes and sometimes not. May be some street-junctions on the map are to proof. But distances about more as 1000 km are possible.
By the way = if the system shows the route, it is not always the best or shortest way. Sometimes the shown route avoid the shorter motorway. So now it is time, to make some experiments with this wayfinding system.

Works for me! This is a truly wonderful feature which really helps bring the world to life. It’s going to be particularly helpful creating bus routes and timetables. I was wondering if the tool takes into account the speed limit of the way and if so whether we should go and tag roads to help the accuracy.

If you set only the name of a town, the way starts or end - so as I have seen - at the place, where the name is set in the map. So seen some names have to get a better place on the map.
But too often the system marks on, that the “place is not known” for places, where in tries before the wayfinding tool works without problems. Are there some tricks, to get better results?
Comment from zhenkang on 23 April 2017 at 11:03
I hope the direction feature also includes metros and buses routes.

Some reactions with surprise-effect.
If a street has a name and a ref-tag, then the name appears in the list of way-sections - but if only a ref-tag, then the ref. At motorways I think it is better to show only the through-going ref-tag - or if possible to show both (then first the ref-tag).
motorway-exits = How will we set rules to tag the names or refs for the links? If there is drawn only the motorway-link, the list shows logically only an unknown name. I think, here is to given a name like “Exit 27 out to B 67” or “Exit 19 in to M 9” or similar. Ot shorter as “out exit 27” or “in exit 19”. Or only a ref like “ex 17”? What is the common meaning?
This is a problem from the first idea to a way-finding system: What is to tag for a comfortable function is not clear for all. I fear, to upgrade the existing mapping is a lot of work. So there a tutorial can be helpful, what is the minimum of way-tagging for this routing-system.

More surprise at secondary roads = Primary road: ref 41 and name Ponte Vejo is shown as “41” but Seconday road: ref 102 and name Avenida Prosperidad as “Avenida Prosperidad”. So we have motorway with name as preference, primary with ref and secondary with name.
What else is shown, the ref or the name - it is better always in the same manner (ref or name). Again: better is to show both.

8 hour drive between St. RICHARDS and PORT EMPORIA, woah. Didn’t realize how big Pretany was until then.
Comment from martinum4 on 23 April 2017 at 19:18
@Sarepava: Yes, it obeys maxspeeds and access restrictions.
@histor: The names of the roads are part of the End user, in this case it’s the OGF-Webpage. As an example, take a look at this little route, it produces this server sided response and you can clearly see that both names and refs are included here. The “place is not known” error comes from nominatim, which i will setup new again in the near future, the migration/update kinda messed it up a bit (but i wanted to do it anway…)
Anyone has any more questions regarding routing?
Kind Regards
Martin

I will continue the Beta-testing this very fine program. Ways about 1879 km from Latina to Beaudry are possible. Sometimes he takes a ferry - sometimes not. There I will proof the junction.
Some streetnames are doubled in the OGF-world (Avenida Central, Muelle Vejo) - can here be a choose-tool?
Comment from thilo on 23 April 2017 at 21:52
@histor: you can also test the routing here:
http://tile.opengeofiction.net/util/routing.html
The routing engine behind it is the same, but the interface (the Leaflet routing plugin) is slightly better IMO.
Comment from histor on 23 April 2017 at 23:47
@ thilo: Der Standard-router hat den Vorteil, dass er in der Wegliste angeklickte Strecken gelb unterlegt. Werde aber beide Versionen testen.
To a ferry = If roads are junctioned with a ferry and if the ferry is the shorter way, the route is shown with the ferry. But the ferry-way is named only as “unnamed road”. Better here are a text like “unnamed ferry”. O.k., now as we know the router takes the way via a ferry it can be helpful, to give this car-ferries a name.
Comment from martinum4 on 24 April 2017 at 00:07
Ferrys work, names would be better for them, otherwise stuff has no real name. For now i implemented a test shuttle like the Euroshuttle between France and UK, will update the routing graph now and see about how it worked when i get up tomorrow morning.
Comment from histor on 24 April 2017 at 00:35
Sure - a ferry for cars should have a name. And - so far as I have seen - the street must junction with the last node of the ferry-line. And some ways over land seemed to be better as with the ferry (see Beishan - Belsante) . May be the way with the ferry is shorter, but more slow (?)
Comment from Sarepava on 24 April 2017 at 10:09
Just to note, that the real OSM also displays quite major roads as unknown roads. I was wondering if it’s possible to tag motorways as unrestricted speed limit since in Karolia many of them are. Or better to tag with a limit of perhaps 130km/h since this is about as fast as normal cars will be going?
Comment from martinum4 on 24 April 2017 at 12:01
I made ferries significant faster (25km/h) compared to the normal OSRM (5km/h) so that they get chosen more often, which results in shorter routes.
OSRM only tries to calculate the fastest route, not the shortest, so a route that is longer is chosen more likely if it is faster (Motorways for example), for more info on the assumed speeds, see the default car.lua on the OSRM github.
@Sarepava: maxspeed=none is the right way to tag roads without any maxspeed, OSRM will default to 130 km/h there, i already tried it in my country.
