Global Stock Market?

Posted by Thunderbird on 15 July 2016 in English.

Hello all,

I’ve finally been working on adding to my wiki and one of the things i’ve been focusing on are businesses in my country. I have begun to set up a stock exchange in Jefferson’s capital. I was curious if there is some sort of international stock market or if businesses remain largely national.

If there is not, we should figure out a way to create an international listing of stock symbols, and their respective stock exchanges. This would also help create a searchable list of the OGF world’s most important corporations.

Is anyone else interested in this and has it already been done?

I’ve been thinking about this for tiny Myrcia. It would be good to have a supra-national stock exchange on which the larger Myrcian corporations could trade. Saying that Iceland (pop: 330,000) and Malta (pop: 440,000) both have their own stock exchanges.

This might be something for me to work on this weekend.

I like the idea. It might take me (and others that want to help) a little while to gather up a listing of all the companies (for Rhododactylia); I have a couple of companies decided upon, but I also have a lot of brands that have yet to really be assigned a corporate parent.

(BTW, this is another great reason to not use real world trademarks: they make things like this a bit dicier because of the overlap with reality.)

If we created this, it might be helpful to also establish a rough idea of exchange rates between countries currencies by creating a global currency index. As far as I know right now, users each have their own currencies and determine their GDP in their own currency. Is there a way we could figure out exchange rates as well?

We have a list of currencies, which includes exchange rates against the “unified standard dollar”.

The “real-world” capital markets (stock markets) are highly concentrated in the modern era, with major markets like NYSE or London dominating. However, historically, there were many smaller markets, including several dozen stock markets in various major cities in a large country like the US.

What if we conceptualize a world which retains such a fragmented structure, but with various new developments like electronic trading and 24 hour trading being things that essentially “blur” the fragmentation?

This would allow us to play with building stockmarkets even in small countries, and we can imagine various sorts of clearing networks and electronic market integration across borders to imagine a nevertheless fairly free-flowing global equities market.

So: each country has its stockmarket with it’s various “national champions” - even Myrcia. However, we can imagine a higher degree of market integration across markets - i.e. a single global trading floor scattered across all these individual markets.

For Ardisphere, rather than focus on the market, specifically (the MVVC “Mercado de valores de Villa Constitución”), I have instead focused on the major index, IBA-150.

@Myrcia By all means, go for it!

@skquinn Real world companies are not allowed anyway, but this makes having your own corporations more interesting!

@Luciano I like that idea, it makes sense, although I don’t know if i’ll ever come up with 150 businesses that all have their own Wiki pages

I have created my stock exchange, it’s called MYRX and it’s based on Iceland’s model.

All of the companies listed have some presence on the OGF mapping in Myrcia.
