The time zones map is really outdated. I was wondering if we could use the multimap extension, which was recently used to show public transport and areas of municipal borders.
Is it currently possible? I haven’t seen coloured areas yet which were generated on the spot.
If possible, we would only need some new relations…

This is a great idea. I’ve begun working on this and should have it up soon. I’ll update the page accordingly. It’s actually quite easy to do, I believe. I’ve been following the detailed discussion earlier in the diaries, so I’ll update the MultiMaps instruction page as the bugs keep getting worked out.

@Alessa: If that’s all going to work, I have some additional ideas. I would like to see daylight saving time as well. We could use the technology we have and overlay the relations. We could have two or three relations for a given time zone. One for those areas where the time zone is valid in January and one where it is valid in July. Optionally one relation for the standard time, independent of the season. We can ignore the different switching dates. We could also try to join areas on the map depending on the tags. Then we don’t need two layers. But I would suggest two relations each, one for January, one for July.
We also should figure out where the centre/reference/default boundary of the time zone is. Is 0° the centre of a time zone or the border between two?
