Wiki page: OpenGeofiction:Regular scheduled maintenance

After some discussion among the admin team, we have decided to set up “regularly scheduled maintenance” for the OGF website.

Every Thursday, 4 AM - 6 AM UTC, the server will be unavailable for edits. It might be available for surfing the map or reading diaries or such, but no guarantees.

We will use this time to troubleshoot issues, make sure the server is healthy, and do a weekly reboot to clear out any memory leak problems.

I’m sure there will be users for whom this schedule is inconvenient. I’m sorry - we have a wide distribution of users in many, many time zones, and so it was bound to be inconvenient for some of you.

Local times:

• US west coast: 8pm - 10pm PST Wednesday
• US east coast: 11pm Wednesday - 1am EST Thursday
• UTC: 04:00 - 06:00 UTC Thursday
• Central Europe: 05:00 - 07:00 CET
• China: 12:00 - 14:00 CST Thursday

While we will be unveiling a new territory request process once the wiki relaunches, in the meantime the admin team is now accepting territory requests in Archanta, Tarephia, and West Uletha only. Territory requests in Antarephia and East Uletha continue to be suspended.

All territory requests must be approved by the admin team before editing, and we require that mappers have an established multi-day edit history before having a territory assigned. We also recommend including some basic plans for the territory as part of the request. More information on our territory assignment procedures are available here.

As a reminder, there are also plenty of collaborative projects for mappers to participate in instead of (or while waiting for) a dedicated territory of their own.

Dear Mappers,

for transparency purposes, to allow any OpenGeofiction user to follow or be part of discussions and decisions regarding the community collaborative projects in West Uletha, these discussions will need to be held on our new Wiki Forums, as soon as these open to the community. Decisions will be made (if necessary) by majority vote over the forums – any OpenGeofiction user can (vote and) discuss (not just users who actively participate in the project – most community collaborative projects in West Uletha represent origins for cultures worldwide).

Projects which would currently come into question:

• Castellan (Castilian Spanish homeland, inspired by Mediterranean Europe and Northern Africa)

• Malesoria (Albanian-speaking nation, inspired by Southeast European states)

• Mazan (Arabic-speaking homeland, inspired by the Middle East and parts of Northern Africa)

• Plevia (Italian-speaking homeland, inspired mostly by Italy)

• Surian Confederation (discussions regarding the whole state, as well as the capital region. Russian-speaking homeland, inspirations from the Soviet Union)

Projects which might come into question in the future:

• Chara Republic (Russian-speaking republic within the Surian Confederation, inspirations mostly from ideal socialist cities and southern Ukraine)

• Franqueterre/Franquia (French-speaking homeland, inspired mostly by Central Western Europe)

• Gobrassanya (English-speaking nation, strong Hawaiian-like indigenous presence)

I encourage coordinators / contributors to community collaborative projects / interested users to post current development plans / development proposals for the mentioned collaborative projects to the forums, as soon as the forums are accessible to the entire OpenGeofiction community.

In this section, issues such as the spread of languages and language groups throughout Uletha and the world can be discussed as well.

Greetings, fellow mapper! On behalf of the OGF Transition Team, please be advised that OGF will be temporarily unavailable from Friday 27 August, through the weekend, returning on Monday 30 August. This downtime is necessary for server migration and necessary upgrades. As part of this downtime, we are asking all users to refrain from editing the map from during this time. Any edits you make or upload during this period may be lost. (JOSM users can still work offline, but please refrain from uploading until after your account is reactivated.)

This migration will allow us to move OGF to more stable servers with added capacity, which will allow us to:

• Bring back custom map layers, including topo map;
• Bring the standard renderer closer to its current OSM counterpart;
• Upgrade to newer versions of iD; and
• Provide a more reliable mapping experience for all users.

Currently, we anticipate that no major data loss will occur: your OGF account and past edits will automatically carry over to the new server, with no action required on your part. On Monday, your password will be automatically reset. To reactivate your account, you will be asked to accept the updated Terms and Conditions before resetting your password. While we do anticipate a smooth transition, some bugs and hiccups are an inevitability. If you do come across any issues during this process, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are also anticipating migrating the OGF wiki the following weekend; be on the lookout for additional communication regarding that effort.

We would like to restart the Deodeca project - a majority Spanish speaking country in South Archanta. The south of the country would be majority native Archantan languages (think native American).

It is envisaged that coordination of the project will be done in Spanish. (so excuse this message!)

Deodeca (map) shares boundaries with the Federal States and Ardencia project, along with other territories.

The OGF Blue Book, linked below, is a document which compiles all of the essential information about rules of the website, territories and mapping, and it is strongly recommended that all new or recently joined users read it.

It continues to serve as an alternative (in some ways as a replacement) to the OGF Wiki, which at the moment offers limited functionality, and can not be repaired by the currently active members of the admin team.

Hello, mappers, a message from Eklas.

Recently, there has been an increase in new users on the website editing the map where they’re not allowed to, citing that they couldn’t access the wiki About page, where important information about our rules is stored. While the admin team doesn’t consider that an excuse for not following the rules (because you can always stop the loading after a few seconds and then read the plain HTML version), it is becoming a problem. This is why I have put together a document which compiles all of the essential information stored on the wiki not only regarding the rules, but also other information and resources. I’ve named it the User Bluebook, in reference to, well, the usual color of guidebooks.

The OGF Bluebook, linked below, compiles all of the essential information about rules of the website, territories and mapping, and it is strongly recommended that all new or recently joined users read it.

Requests which do not follow the procedure are likely to take much longer to consider. Please help us to help you by making good requests.

Every request this week has failed to indicate the requested territory in the subject line. This makes it hard for individual admins to know if the request is for the continent for which they are responsible.

Finally, the admin team will be able to handle territory claims again soon. However, we made two decisions about the assignment process.

First, we decided not to work through the backlog of messages received during the recent months, but ask everyone to submit their application again. We will however try to give precedence to older claims as much as possible, using the received messages for verification.

Second, we divided the OGF planet into several regions, each being administered by a different team member. These regions will have different rules, and also might not start accepting territory claims before early March.

Before submitting any territory claim, please read the detailed descriptions about the new assignment process and the different regions.

Sorry, we’ve been really busy recently. Territory claims and other submitted requests will be processed, but it might take 2-3 weeks until we’re back to normal, thanks for your patience.

Ever since the beginning of this website, people have been tracking down and redirecting new users mapping in the wrong areas.

Now there’s a space where we can share who we’ve contacted and when we contacted them. This will help us reduce the amount of contacts we make, not only by eliminating duplicated contacts, but also by encouraging others to join the effort.
