Giliarca, finally.

Posted by eleinads on 2 July 2019 in English (English)

Here we are. I've been in ogf for exactly two years, and these days I'm finishing mapping the city of Giliarca. Only a little piece remains to be done, which I will finish in the next few hours.

It took me twice as much as planned (I started counting on ending it in one year), but the result satisfies me enough, as far as I can see in ogf cities and territories that are incredibly more beautiful and worked much better.

I would like to thank all those who gave me very important tips to improve the city: thanks to their advice it is very different to some naive ideas that I initially had.

However, the work is not finished: I will be able to act on the details (even on your impulse: you can still correct me). And above all I will now work on the wiki page, going to show how certain aspects of the city that might appear "strange" (starting from its position) are not in contrast with the likelihood principle.

Finally: if you remember, a little while ago I asked you about the number of inhabitants. After that consultation, I established that Giliarca has 967524 inhabitants. In the initial project the number was higher: for this reason I have scaled the airport (removing a terminal and a runway) and I have reduced the central station, considering however that the tourist and business influx significantly increases the number of people present in the city area.

Thank you all.

Giliarca has been one of my favorite OGF cities for quite some time. Congratulations on all your hard work!

That's amazing. Can't wait to see what that spectacular mapping ability would look like on an entire country.

You did a remarkable job there. Your city has style, charm and interest. You did so many details and gave it a high nivel of realism, that's super inspiring. Hope you'll find time to continue to offer us other examples of your talent.

A nice blend of the old and the new, and also a splendid combination of natural and urban features. The Supreme Leader wishes to visit it one day physically.

Gilliarca is mapped with more detail than parts of OSM. Great job. I hope to see this work on all of Gardensa.

Why do your star burgers have no drive through? Why are your shops spread out in tiny chunks , with no parking (some) ? There is housing gaps , unless those are planned parks. There also isn't many parks.

I can give you as much criticism as I want , but this is a brilliant city , probably the most buildings mapped .It's better to have quality over speed, and This why I suggest you keep going.

This is some great quality mapping! I've been looking for hours at this city in the last few months. It's just so amazingly detailed. Congratulations on finishing it!

@MOI N lots of drive-throughs, large car parkings and big malls aren't that common in older denser cities (read: cities that are not based on most USA cities). Space in the city center is scarce and therefor quite expensive.

If you want to map plenty of parking lots and drive-thrus, the FSA has plenty of vacant states that need owners.

Thank you all for the kind words.

zhenkang: of course you can come and visit Giliarca whenever you want, either privately or on an official visit.

MOI N: your observation on parking lots deserves rightly an analysis. As you can see there is a good density of parking lots in the central area, but actually the density decreases a lot in the northern area. This is an area of recent urbanization (after 1990), which means that it is much easier to have parking spaces in the basement floors of the buildings. However, it is also more normal for there to be free areas for open-air parking. So I'll add it immediately.

This also reminds me, I need to post a diary entry regarding Antigo City, which is still under construction

This is amazing. It is truly a rare sight to see a city which is anywhere close to completion on OGF, and this is done with such high detail as well.

I do have a few critiques, mainly with regards to highway junctions. In particular, https://opengeofiction.net/#map=17/12.14680/61.85192 would have stupid amounts of traffic and be completely unusable irl. You should never underestimate just how much traffic even a mid size airport creates, which thousands of jobs and even more passengers commuting to and from the airport. This intersection has too many connections on and off and the way the residential roads which run parallel just suddenly merge is unrealistic. I'd recommend redoing this intersection. Other intersections, particularly in the north of the city (https://opengeofiction.net/#map=17/12.14680/61.85192) seem a bit oversized and I feel could be replaced with a roundabout (or few). Look at these intersections in Barcelona for example: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/41.37674/2.07371, https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/41.41239/2.16872.

MrOobling, Thanks! If I understand correctly, I should make the airport highway junction more interconnected with the entire network of industrial roads around it. You're right: now that junction connects the two highways but it's too "isolated" from the overall road network. I will try to create a more fluid and interconnected junction. Relatively to the north junction, unfortunately the link is not correct: there is twice that of the airport. If you send it to me, I can evaluate how to fix it.

This is an example of good mapping in OGF. It has buildings in scale and well designed, an excellent natural mapping and many details, I congratulate you for this. This community has good cities and users, and this city is an example of this.

We humans can not do perfect things. But we do put effort into what we do, even if we make mistakes along the way, we will achieve great things and we will achieve our goals. This phrase inspires me daily and I wanted to share it with eleinads and the whole community.
