Hello,
Can someone create a video (walkthrough) on how to use JOSM for editing the OpenGeofiction map and displaying the OpenGeofiction map as background in JOSM? The section of it in the FAQ is a bit hard to understand.
It can be useful to future users of Opengeofiction

Clearly there is huge demand for better documentation on how to use JOSM with OGF. I have decided to try to take this on as my weekend project, although personally I despise documentation projects - one reason why I quit my career in database design, which boiled down to about 90% documentation and 10% design.
I think a desktop/video walkthrough is probably the way to go, as suggested here. I haven’t tried to make one of these in more than a decade, however - so it may take a while to put it together - I have to refamiliarize myself with the techniques and desktop video capture tools first.

Luciano, I think you were spot on with your earlier comment. Folk need to be able to help themself out a lot more, rather than spoon fed. The instructions in the FAQ are a simple “put A into option X; B into option Y”. If that’s too confusing, well - sorry - you probably want to keep away from a program like JOSM.
If somebody wants to get familiar with JOSM then the best idea is to do that with Openstreetmap (OSM). That’s what 99.9% of JOSM users use it for, and where the documentation is at. It also gets you used to the OSM tags.
But what to do? Get familiar by helping out with humanitarian mapping; see the Humanitarian Mapping link on LearnOSM.

Here’s a video. I’m not pleased with the quality on the upload - it’s a bit blurry - but I think that’s a youtube issue rather than a recording issue, since my original is quite crisp.

So now you should be able to figure out JOSM. Maybe. Happy mapping.

Great stuff Luciano - I have seen a few things you do differently than me - better, I think. The walkthrough is fine, enough detail, but not too much. Quality a bit blurry but not sure how much of that is at my end. Nice to hear you in person too. Happy mapping.

@Luciano: At 8:25 you say you don’t think anybody in OGF is using remote control. But I use remote control and I thought this was the only way to do it. It allows me to click “Edit” and download an area.
Great video and I also agree with wangi that not everything can be explained to new mappers. If you want to learn more than just the basics, the resources are out there. If people are interested enough, they will do the work.

Thanks for the feedback. I decided to move this conversation to my “bliki” and have copied your comments there.
