Haarinkonaaipi lies in the north of Uletha, a few kilometres off the south eastern coast of konsiat. The territory consists of a group of mountainous and flat islands.

The country is inhabited by two contrasting groups of people: Haapi people (or the fishers who have blonde hair-blue eyes) and Ölleau people ( the reindeer herders who have dark-brown hair- green eyes Aasiatic people).

The name “Haa-rin-ko-naai-pi” literally means “Sea of sun’s new land”.

Being very excited and impatiently waiting to map on my claimed territory, I wonder how long it usually takes for other users to get approved by admins in order to start editing on their claimed territories after their first 7 days.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all! Does anyone know how to make a large plateau in their nation? I’m thinking that you just put a cliff, but it is not very representative of a plateau and doesn’t render as quickly as the structures around it. If anyone knows or has any examples, please tell me. Once again, Happy Holidays!

There is a cliff on the map that I’m trying to use as a plateau, but it does not render as quickly as the road on the other side of the border (At Zoom 12). This is what I mean.

Having recently acquired my own land in OGF, I have started work on the capital city of Myola. But first, a brief introduction to the basis of this country.

Background

New Austland is intended to reflect Australia and New Zealand (as suggested by its catchy name). The attributes of New Austland, both natural and artificial, should seem reasonably familiar if one has lived or travelled in either country.

For example, the WIP capital city of Myola is located slightly inland from a river mouth and a large bay. Every Australian state and territory capital (except Canberra) is located in a similar position. This was due to the early European settlers deliberately choosing these locations for practical reasons (i.e. trade, agriculture and transport).

Objectives

I am aiming to create New Austland as an ‘improved version’ of an Australian/New Zealand city. Those who are Australians or Kiwis may recognise some key features already in Myola that are characteristics of cities from these two countries.

What constitutes a ‘better’ country or city is obviously subjective. To me, there are many issues present in Australian cities that can be addressed. This is, in fact, my day job. So I do have some experience and knowledge in this area. I might go into some specific measures in later posts. For now, have a quick look at what I have done so far in Myola if you would like a general idea of what I am talking about.

New Austland will not be built as a fully-planned country. Instead, settlements will show patterns of historical organic growth followed by retrofitting of improvements in the recent past.

As such, I hope to use this as a project to show what can be achieved in real life throughout similar cities. It is very possible to make better habitats for humans and geofiction can be a useful tool to showcase the potential of creativity and imagination.

As much as we have our own OGF featured maps, shouldn’t there be a page where good OSM maps could be shown, so that we can model our maps based on the RW maps?

(If only if at least 75% of our world is as detailed and realistically looking as OSM’s)

Now that I’ve finally got JOSM set up, I spent a good chunk of yesterday mapping out the rough outline of the topography for my country, Patermas, which you can see here. There are two mountain ranges, the Brocades to the west (which begin to the north, in Gamen, and are based off of the Tell Atlas in Algeria) and the El Salteadors/Yaguis to the east, a large karst formation which Patermas shares with Draco and Targueral (and are based off of the Mogotes range in Cuba, with a bit of southeastern China/northern Vietnam, though not quite that elaborate). They gradually move toward each other, creating a large, tapering central valley, and meet around the southern border with the massive TA013 territory, currently unclaimed.

I also mapped out the country’s major river systems, including the Col River, which is the wide, central river into which the southern and eastern mountain watersheds drain, creating a large fertile territory, protected from the Serion Desert by the Brocades, and suitable for agriculture. There are also several large salt lakes between the Serion in the Brocades, based on the Chott el Djeridd in Tunisia.

Last but not least, I added a few more minor cities so that every metro with more than 200k people is mapped, and then drew the main lines of the country’s expressway system. There will be a dominant urban mega-region in the north along the coast, three cities of about 1.5 million, and then a network of cities with 200-500K people. There will be a population of about 22 million, giving Patermas a population density of 125 people per km2, similar to France or Poland. About 80% of the population will live in metropolitan/urban areas (similar, again, to major western countries), meaning a rural population of about 4 million.

We need a land to settle in! We would like to be in the northern region of the globe with snow and mountains in order for us to herd our reindeers, and fish.

We are interested in northern Uletha, particularly northern Konsiat. We would be very appreciated if Konsiat could give it’s northern region to us!!

This will likely be the point in which I stop posting as much on the Diaries, as admins have notified me that this isn’t the ideal place to make constant updates, but I’ll still detail the development of my new country.

Today marks a time in which I’ve become obsessed with details in OGF. I made a little nature reserve and hill, as well as a nearby hamlet, all within 500 ft on the scale. It’s as if I keep accidentally zooming in really far and making details (at least, what I consider to be details).

Take a look at the location and you’ll see the new Tambora Hill Nature Reserve.

I’ve not posting frequently here, but I have been editing some on OGF.

Anyway, here is a Harda Archipelago blank map, for all the needs of this area of Antarephia. Soon I’m going to do one with borders also.

Alright, so I’m a new user of Opengeofiction and I’ve claimed a country originally recognized as Blessia, which is an island nation which borders the nations of Justinique, Snjorland, and Ikhia.

I’m going to make a diary detailing the development I’ll be making on Mauruistien.

Currently, all I’ve updated is a portion of coastline and all I’ve created is a lake, two streams, and a river. Stay tuned for info that’s actually interesting!

Today, 13th December, marks four years since I was granted an OGF identity and started editing. I think the User Diary is an excellent place to say a few words to mark this date.

Firstly would like to thank isleno and the other admins for making this site possible and, in general, keeping it as one of the more civil corners of the internet.

In this time I have developed a great deal as a mapper. I’ve done a lot of studying and examination of the real world and also a lot of revision of earlier areas. Particularly, this year I decided to remake the capital of Karolia and am now a lot happier with how it looks (and of course there is a lot more still to do). I don’t think I could have had this city looking satisfactory without the years of practice in other areas and the headspace to keep working out what my country is about in ever greater detail.

Projects by other mappers I have enjoyed watching have included Myrcia’s Dunwic, which has also been subject to revision and improvement in the last year; Tparigo’s Brocelliande which has extraordinary detail, and Ernestpcosby’s similar improvements to Quentinsburgh.

I hope the new forum becomes a lively and useful place for sharing of technique and debate between all users, new and old.
