Hi, sorry for posting two a day, I can’t delete diary entries even if they’re mine.

I just wanted to ask fellow mappers for feedback on my lastest drawing, which will hopefully enter the map soon. It is meant to be a post socialist housing project with an ancient monastery in the middle of it south of the Lorava river, and has been partly started here.

I drew the river completely wrong, I know I’ll have to put something there as well.

Thanks!

While writing this, I’m uploading a “nuke changeset” which will erase my capital city Markvað almost completely. If you ever visited Markvað, you probably will know why. The city was quite… “edgy”. The reason for this might be interesting, so I’m telling you the history of Markvað and also a short story of my mapping life before I came to OGF.

There is a railway simulation program around, called BAHN (which is just the german word for railroad). It’s not a “typical” railroad simulation - no 3D and also no cockpit simulation. Just plain 2D. You can create quite large networks with it and simulate complex train operations. It’s like a model railroad, however, you can have a model railroad in the size of an entire country. I used to play that game since I was 7 years old (it was 1993), in fact, it was my first computer game. Since then, BAHN evolved quite heavily. Well, I don’t want to make any advertising for this game, so let’s move on.

I had designed a large city in that simulation. And this city became Markvað when I started with OGF. The one more thing you need to know about BAHN is that you can only build tracks in 90 and 45 degrees (and, in the meantime, also 22,5 degrees). And this is the reason why Markvað used to be so rectangular.

In those BAHN days, Markvað was built with the goal in mind to maximize the public transport network to a phantastic density. When I imported the city to OGF, there were about 40+ Metro lines and a very dense tram network (which didn’t make it into OGF, I planned to insert it later). I guess, the new Markvað won’t have so many lines. However, I copied my “maximize the public transport network” dogma to Norðurland (as you can read in the wiki article about the country). So there will be still an almost unrealistic PT density in Markvað. However, I will design it in a way that COULD be real in a country which enforces its citizens to use public transport a lot.

Hello all,

I am a fairly new mapper and started a few months ago. I own the country Belunjio and was wondering what you guys think about what I have created so far. I have created an small village in my stretch of mountains going across the country and I am quite impressed with it. It is along a mountain pass and some of the houses in it are fairly new including the fire station.

Thanks

Hello

Having dabbled in geofiction for many years, I was surprised to find this website the other day. It never occurred to me that geofictional projects could be presented and amalgamated in such a way.

By way of background, I am a regular OpenStreetMap contributer. My edits to OpenGeoFiction will almost certainly reflect my experience in OSM.

The town of Pantalis

My eyes were drawn to the location marked ‘Pantalis’ upon selecting this region through the user introduction screen. Located between two apparently major railway junctions, this existing station in the middle of nowhere seemed like a good place to start.

I have designed the town in the style of a small country town. It is primarily sustained by its local agriculture (particularly wineries) and some associated tourism. The railway station provides a vital passenger and freight link to the outside world. I have not yet built the freight yards, but that is next on my list.

Being a relatively flat area, the streets are quite linear and meet at 90 degree angles. The shopping street has been pedestrianised and is very attractive for shoppers.

I am now working on a larger township (Cazoon) further to the south where I hope to expend my horizons a little further and am very excited about the possibilities that OpenGeoFiction presents!

(I actually finished this one a while back, but forgot to post it to the Diaries…)

The Morgan Waste Processing Center is a large landfill facility in the collaborative territory of Drevet, built mostly to service the city of Reback. It features recycling centers, landfill gas collection, vehicle maintenance garages, and admin offices.

This was my first attempt at mapping a really detailed facility, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, but would appreciate feedback. Any thoughts?

The joys of rescaling things … like entier city center….basically rescale in JOSM by selecting all and using Ctrl+Shift (or was it Ctrl+Alt … one of them is rotate, but you can work that out) and upload.

And all roads and rail broken in JOSM, split those and reassemble using the web editor…

Check using the OGF Scale Helper, eg: http://tile.opengeofiction.net/util/map_scale.html?map=C/15.372989512876591/62.00805/46.58825&map2=OSM/x/51.48012/-3.17211&pxpt=0.277&scale=6250

Now you notice that the area for shopping, offices, government, railway station etc is about the size of Cardiff, Wales. We even have a stadium in the city center!

Repeat until correct, sane or until insanity has set in…

Finally a land is all mine!! Mine I tel you, my precious….sorry, too much Tolkein :-) A week or sort of JOSM practice in Midistland: Talamanca out to the coast and many years of pent up world building, conlanging frustrations :-)

Gweriniaeth Gwalia has been started and at least the center of its capital Lleifor has been set out along with a short Wiki article (structure blatantly stolen from Tircambry). Which gets me to my next point which is what is Gwalia?

Well, a Celtic republic with a number of similarities (language being one) with Tircambry, but with a differing model of government, history and quite likely economic development. A kind of Celtic/Welsh reimagiing of Finnish/Nordic modern history….let’s see what happens.

So, next steps…the valleys immediately to the south of Lleifor, to the north will come a particularly nice beachfront, then plans for a larger port in the north east and somewhere in the north the airport…

I need some serious help, I’ve messed something up big time! So I’m working on changing the tags for roads in San Vale and Breassau State, and I deleted a bunch of roads from around San Vale and to the west of it, but somehow it didn’t delete all the nodes, so now there are blank nodes everywhere, and I can’t get rid of them all! Can somebody come and help please? I’m not sure at all how it happened!

Hi there,

Due to some OSM research, it just became clear to me that I possibly overused footways a lot in my cities…

See here or here.

I extensively use footways as “real” footways. However, It seems that in the OSM commuity, this is really uncommon. Footways seem only to be used if they are not situated directly alongside a road.

What do you think? Is my way of using footways totally wrong and I should delete them? Or is this usage tolerable?

Greetings, Markus

OK so after I had my mapping moved from Commonia over to my own territory I am now starting to fix some of the old mapping issues. I am trying to best figure out how to fix this situation in the western part of Prentice County.

I originally mapped this area with US 101 as a coastal North to South route that services this area with a bridge over the Islip River. I also then built a trunk route facility SR 50 (State Road 50) on the north shore of the Islip River to link up Riegerston to the coast with a bridge over the Islip River close to US 101.

Now the issue is this. This would seem to be an expensive venture with an unneeded crossing so close to the other crossing. Also CR 493 (County Road 493) would now seem to overloaded with traffic. CR 493 serves a built up area with upscale homes and shopping areas. This as mapped is the only current way to get to Danica Beach. I think I originally intended to give service to Holloway Beach but ended up mapping Danica Beach as a resort area that would seem to have more folks traversing.

I see a couple of options here. Should i just remap SR 50 to serve the north shore and chalk this up to a mapping error? Should I close off the US 101 bridge and make it a fishing pier and then link a new alignment over to the SR 50 bridge?

I am fixing this. I don’t know who did it. But I am going to make this look like a much nicer city. This is TRUNK ROAD OVERLOAD. No No No No No No No. Wont delete anything, but a simple change in road type will make this look like a much more appealing location. As a senior editor I am making an executive decision on this one. Just for the sake of visual appeal of the overall map.
