In terms of Port Cameron...

Posted by Volcanizion on 10 November 2019 in English (English)

So I just came back from a school trip to Bosnia and Croatia in which we went to Split. I noticed that Port Cameron is similar to Split with the general outline of the city.

Perhaps the historic old town can be designed to be like Diocletian's palace? I'm currently designing the old town area to have a Roman-like area, a Middle ages area, a 19th century area and of course a few more modern bits here and there.

I think the idea of a broadwalk in the downtown area would fit well, what do you guys think?

Wait, I'm impressed people remember Port Cameron!

I designed Port Cameron without intended real-world inspiration. I wanted it to be a resorty beach town on the southern coast of Gobrassanya. I think the old city center would be better situated on top of the peninsula jutting out in front of the port.

Well that's awkward because I've begun work on the old town where it says Historic Center

I didn't mean for it to be a "historic center" as much as I was trying to create an American-esque "old town" district, but you do you. I can't wait to see what it turns into!

In editing the blue territories you should keep in mind the theme, culture and language - Gobrassanya isn't Mediterranean Europe.

Agreed, wangi -- Looking back on it now, I mainly used a slightly more rural version of Kingston, the capital of Jamaica for inspiration on the history, climate, culture, city development, etc.

I doubt basing Port Cameron on an American town is a good idea as Gobrassanya is supposed to be a Eurasian nation. That's why I chose to partially base it off Split while giving it a more modern flair similar to a Japanese seaside town.

Also Wangi, your comments seem to shoot down on all my ideas and I don't really like it

If you don't want feedback, don't post on the user diaries. I believe the only other feedback I've given you was on the massive bridge. You seemingly took on board the general feedback. As a long-term Gobrassanya editor I've a lot of experience tidying up ill considered edits, ones which distracted from the goal of realism. As Archanta admin I see even more.

Have you read https://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Gobrassanya ?

Think Asian with European colonisation. Don't think Roman runes.

wangi - would it be too extreme of me to delete the whole port cameron project and start over from scratch, this time with a real-world city I can base it off of?

I've no fixed opinion on that, I don't see anything really wrong with the original town, just that it could do with realistic detailing. More than a grid.

The airport to the NW should go. The railway branch is totally unrealistic. But these are probably later additions.

Please stop going around Gobrassanya and deleting things just to rebuild it yourself. Look at OGF:Blue country etiqutte.

Note that in 'Preserve quality work,' it says that you should:

'refrain from changing or deleting quality work just because you have a different vision. It's fine to fix mistakes, rework implausible things, clean up sloppy mapping, help blend areas with those nearby, etc. But don't change or delete someone's hard work merely because you happen to prefer something different.'

Please don't delete a person's work because of what you see is better.

You've been doing this for a long time, since your first diary.

Thank you for that, iiEarth.

I definitely had some nice plans for Port Cameron's historic district, but the new pedestrian streets made me sad, to be quite honest. I did not think any of my mapping in Port Cameron met any of the "requirements" for deletion or altering iiEarth outlined above. All I ask is for you to respect established mapping and look for areas where you can start from scratch.
