Dikes?

Posted by varnel_maiser on 19 January 2018 in English.

Has anyone so dar tried making dikes in their OGF country? I know I have, and I’m starting the new project here, or the Real-World counterpart here.

You just knew I was going to reference the Netherlands, didn’t you.

If anyone has, please tell me how you did it and managed to get it to render in a higher layer.

Thanks, Zekiel

UPDATE:

I figured out how it was done in OSM. Still, I want to know how people at OGF have done it.

Can you define a ‘dike’?

Here:

According to google:

Dike: 1. A long wall or embankment built to prevent flooding from the sea.

Like this: 1.

in Zylanda I set a lot of dykes, because the land is flat near the sea. But why a dyke through your bay in a more hilly contour?

There are almost no dikes in OGF, just run a overpass-query to see them. If you don’t know how it works, just click here and go to the link -> “man made” -> “dyke”.

I would call it a “causeway”, but I have one running across a marsh in my country here.

Well, in Singapore we have the ‘causeway’ which links from Malaysia to Singapore. I think Khaiwoon has quite a number to connect their islands.

Äh - I see a lot of dykes with the overpass-search. A lot in Zylanda, but too in other countries.

About dyke the englisch wikipedia is relative poor [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levee], because in that article the main aspect are dykes at a river. The german wikipedia-version for “Deich” is more informative, if you seek for informations about dikes at the sea.

Ah yes. More replying to @histor’s fist comment, I simply thought it would be an interesting idea to try. I could say that there have been historical settlements that would have been long lost if not for the files, I could say that we required more farmland and tried land reclamation. My current prevailing idea is that the areas behind the file were historically valleys in between the mountains below sea levels. Due to the massive amount of industrial facilities in the OGF world that leads to pollution ergo rising sea levels, those valley areas would be flooded completely if the government didn’t do something, so they built the files to protect the low lying valley.

This might not be the best idea and I may have to refine it or scrap the idea of a Dyke, but at least I can say I tried. Thank you for your advice, everyone. I will also have to fix the tag, as I have removed the “manmade” part in front of the coastline.

Thanks, Zekiel

Also, the OGF Scale helper seems to be a little outdated for my edits. I can search up my old content which shouldn’t really exist anymore, but I can’t find any of my recent edits. I can search more recent content of my neighbors without problem for the most part.

That’s exactly what I am basing my dykes (or dikes) on @kazuya!

Comment from Sarepava on 20 January 2018 at 12:41

Would the cliff tag be any help? The need here is to show that the roadway is on land and not a viaduct. Of course, it’s possible to build a dyke without a roadway or railway on top.

About your ‘deleted dyke’, I thought of suggesting if you can replace with a chain of resort islands or something like that, or maybe (if you want to be unrealistic) have a large island metropolis in the middle of the bay and that helps create a purpose for a long dyke.

Comment from varnel_maiser on 12 August 2018 at 18:38

That is a very good idea. I can see it already. Artificial islands in the middle of the bay, new beaches along it, all connected by helicopter.

Thanks,
Zekiel
