Hello!

Since Logan230 has resigned from Drevet, entrusting the country to BelpheniaProject and myself, I’d like to explain what is new in Drevet.

Firstly, new land features have been discovered across the country, most notably a mountain range on the southern border. Several rivers have been mapped as well, with potentially more to come.

Secondly, Drevet’s eastern interior has been divided into several smaller states to make it easier and less intimidating to develop, especially for those who cannot use JOSM.

With that said, Drevet still welcomes people to develop the country here and there. I am also welcome to the idea of mappers acting as ‘governors’ of some of the states. North and South Vienna are governed by me. Taswell is governed by BelpheniaProject.

If you would like to develop in Drevet, keep this in mind:

-The guidelines set by Logan230 will continue (See Logan’s ‘Drevet is now a community territory’ diary entry)

-Keep realism in mind, don’t turn Drevet into a giant mega city

That is all I have for now.

Have fun!

I’m confused. Since when is there a new landmass? What are (going to be) the policies for claiming this new territory (when it becomes available - I’m assuming it isn’t yet since I don’t see it on the overview map)?

Apologies if I sound mad (I’m surprised, not angry) and/or if there’s supposed to be a post about this and I wasn’t supposed to bring this up… even though it’s been mentioned already.

Since I created the provinces of Řots, I have been trying to get their names on the map; following the FAQ instructions doesn’t however seem to work, and trying to copy the data of other countries’ provinces, states, etc. doesn’t either. Of course, the provinces are all named after their largest settlements, so on the map that opens when you click the link above, the provinces are more or less clear, but zooming in or out rapidly causes confusion (for more resp. less settlements are then mentioned). What can I do?

So,

I won’t write much but:

  1. Cookieland isn’t realistic. It’s just funny, that’s all. I was thinking a bit and only this came to my mind. Nothing original.
  2. Just got a message
  3. Of course I want OGF World to be more realistic (btw, maybe we’ll get some name for this world? Do we have one?)
  4. Can you help me with new name? Maybe you would like to see some specific country name? A name that will make all (or almost all) of us happy! ;)

Also, I will need a new flag then but I think I’ll invent something good.

Ideas in comments below. I’ll pick the “best” or you can vote somehow? I’ll discuss my choice with you guys of course :)

Have a nice day, waiting for comments!

New forests in Gobrassanya?

Based on real forest shapes from Earth. They definitely look more natural from a distance, not much difference closer up though. I can reverse the changesets if people don’t like it. In one or two places a smidgen of forest has intruded into a town, but that can easily be fixed. If you have thoughts feel free to share.

Here is my country :

http://opengeofiction.net/#map=7/31.382/33.728

I’m slowly creating the background of this country. It is currently composed of a few former independant states that met hundreds of years ago, influenced by Sathrian history. People are mostly native from this country, there are sathrian people and between 5 and 10% of nomad people that have partly settled. The country has its own language that I’m slowly inventing too, mostly from Greek, then Latin and Slavic words.

I’m looking for a good name for my country. I want it to have an etymology that fits with the country’s history. I have several ideas, and I need help to make names from these groups of words :

  • “Trayadasi (an) not” (southland/way to the south = People from easthern Uletha were passing by this region to go to Tarephia for commerce)

  • “Panes Ka’lini” or “Scanda Ka’lini” (region of the great lake)

  • “Kapanes ligoi” (united great regions)

Maybe you have other ideas.. With this work, I could start making wiki page about the country.

Thank you in advance !

As I don’t use josm (computer problems), I would like if anyone could measure my city area as I would like to make my cities to population density accordingly. Yes some areas of my cities will have high population density (Paris, France) as everyone will live in apartments that are incredibly small there are 10-15 stories high, similar to central Paris. Their are only 2/10 districts where the majority of people live in houses. I just wanted to make a population density chart for all my major cities (over 100,000)- http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Lallemand . I have all my cities on the map and if you need help finding one just PM me. but If you can’t do that, please help on just Avewood- http://opengeofiction.net/#map=13/14.0150/95.6681 Thanks in advance for any help.

If people are constructing nations and would like to have place to put up some of their more notable citizens, I have created the Tamarindian equivalent of the Nobel Prizes, here…

http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Serna_Prizes

Please help yourself to any slots, but try not to be too greedy!

Also do feel free to add stories to the section below the prize-winners table, there are currently sections for notable winners, controversies, and refusals. Anything you want to add either within these themes or by adding a new theme, please do. You can even criticise the Tamarindian selection committee for its biased decision-making, I don’t mind! (But if you want to criticise another country as part of a story, please check with them first!)

Hi everybody,

some of you may have seen it already: I’m an unsystematic “here and there” mapper in OGF. So especially within Kalm my territory is kind of a patchwork between different levels of detail right now.

As a result of this problem, I created an overview of my most interesting mapping results so far, so that you can see what I’m working on: Mapping examples of joschi81 The examples are grouped by cities, islands and rural regions.

But it is quite frustrating to see that filling such large countries up to a satisfying level of detail would actually require more than a lifetime (supposing that one has not the chance to map in OGF as a “full-time job”). So my question is: How do you handle this? Or more generally asked: Do you have this problem as well? If yes: What are your ways to handle it?

Then I would like to know: How should I continue my work in OGF?

  • 1) Just go ahead like I did so far, mapping here and there, large scale, small scale - because this seems to be my preferred way and step by step I will come closer to an overall very nice map.
  • 2) Change to a more systematic way of mapping: drawing small scale features like railways, rivers/lakes, motorways/trunk roads and forests/natural reserves and maybe generalized urban areas (using landuse=residential) first, then moving closer to a large-scale level, layer by layer.
  • 3) Stick to the cities, they are the most interesting part. Draw one city at a time up to a good level of detail. Draw the rural regions only very roughly at the same time.
  • 4) Give up parts of my territory to reduce the area to be mapped by myself.
  • 5) Start a collaboration with interested users who want to participate in developing (e.g.) Kalm and agree on (and are able to) adapting to my mapping style. (This kind of work might be hard for both sides…)
  • 6) Other solutions…

Thanks for giving me your opinion.

Best regards joschi81

Hi everyone,

Since a day or two I’m having problems with editing (I’m using “edit with id”). Normally I can simply click on a map feature and it highlights and a panel with details will open. But now whenever I click on something nothing happens. When I move my cursor over map feature it will still show in the left editing panel that it’s for example a residential area or a road, but when I click on it doesn’t highlight.

I’m using opengeofiction for about two and a half weeks now, so I’m still quite new to it. Maybe I accidently messed around with some options or something. Does anyone know what is going on and have a solution for the problem?

Thanks in advance

Hello everyone, I’m relatively new to this thing here and would like to introduce my little project :) I claimed UL020 after experimenting in the community area for a few days first, and am currently building the capital of my country. (I don’t have any names yet, and I’m still undecided on the cultural background such as language etc.) My city’s shape is heavily influenced by Paris, as in that I 1) Designed the “historic” core with a street layout inspired by Paris 2) Intend on having the CBD a bit seperated (in the south) 3) don’t have one main train station, but instead the Far Distance/High Speed Rail System starts from 3 seperate stations situated around the inner city 4) The inner city is embedded in a périphérique like city highway and so it goes on. I obviously don’t want to simply make a copy of Paris, but these considerations are kind of the mainfame of the whole project for now. I hope that I will soon be able to lay out the basics for the country’s culture and society, so I can also eventually start naming things properly xD Any advice is welcomed~ Cheers Leo

Cross-posted from my “Bliki.”

This morning, as I was working on my transit system RUTA-VC, adding stations to the many lines I’ve projected, I realized that I had crossed a milestone of sorts: RUTA-VC now has more than 1000 rail stations, including Subway, Elevated, Commuter Rail and Trams.

This seems like too many. But I’m not sure. The source-model for RUTA-VC is probably Seoul, since I know it best, with aspects of Mexico City and Chicago thrown in. Seoul is a city much larger than my current concept of VC, but it has an integrated subway/commuter rail network including about 600 stations. Many of the stations I’ve been building lately are tram stations, which Seoul doesn’t have. I like trams and wanted VC to have all the trams that a large world city would have if it had never undergone the “busification” that happened in so many cities in the 1940s-1960s. Cities like Los Angeles, Tokyo and even Mexico City once had vast tram networks. So I think adding all those tram stations creates a seemingly unrealistic number of “rail” stations, but they’re just tram platforms, every 500m or so. If I subtract the tram-only stations, I get 681 rail stations for the whole RUTA-VC network. And… currently projected routes are not finished at all. So… Still probably too many rail stations. The Ardisphere is obviously a rail-mad country.

Or… maybe VC is bigger than I thought? Here is wikipedia, on rail transit in Tokyo: “Public transport within Greater Tokyo is dominated by the world’s most extensive urban rail network (as of May 2014, the article Tokyo rail list lists 158 lines, 48 operators, 4,714.5 km of operational track and 2,210 stations…” At my current rate of rail-network building, VC is destined to reach those figures.

Hello.

Recently I claimed a territory to the west of Belphenia. I created a town along the border, but I saw that the country line between Belphenia and my new country did not show up on iD, Potlatch 2, or JOSM.

Any ideas on what is going on with this?

Edit: Apparently, I can’t change the country name, either. This is getting really frustrating.

Over the past couple of months I’ve made what I would like to think are some substantial improvements to AR901. I started with a coastal town named Frogtown (which I’m about to write up the history of once I get wiki access), and have cleaned up the roads made by other prior mappers to improve either connectivity or the plausibility of the road layouts as the case may be.

I’ve also added some prefecture boundaries in the parts where cities already exist. I ran out of names though, so I could use some help here as well.

Also, for all of this, I still can’t think of a good name for the country to save my life. Since this is a community territory, I’m asking if anyone has any good ideas.
