Hello, everyone. Does anyone know why kerbs are not rendered anymore on the standard layer, although they can still be seen while switching to histor’s style?

My first guess it that osm-carto was updated, but I couldn’t find any recent change regarding this (mainly because I’m not sure where to look for). Could be that the case, though? AFAIK, OGF layer is ‘tied’ to OSM’s, so any mod there would appear here, am I right?

And a side question, is ‘micromapping’ okay here, or should it be avoided due to higher bandwith use, storage capacity issues etc.?

hmhmhm…

Well, it’s not really a problem. It’s something that just bothers me, and I wonder if it can be solved. As you may see in this screenshot, nodes are invisible. I don’t know if I’m the only one who has this problem, or if this is because of this newer version of JOSM. It’s really annoying not to be able to see what are you editing and where are the nodes, as I got used to see them before. Is there a solution? Am I able to change this in the options menu?

I’m sure that most of you have up and forgotten about me by now.

I was the stereotypical young teenager who only knew how to draw suburbs of large American cities and didn’t know a lick about topography.

I quit last September. 9th grade had started, I was up and working at 4 AM each day and wasn’t finished until 8 PM, had tests basically every week, and to make an understatement, it wasn’t really helping that I was immersed in a virtual world. That summer I had too much time on my hands, and I gave myself so many duties on here that by the time school showed up again to bite me I was completely overwhelmed.

I’m mapping again during the pandemic, at least excluding the 90% of my day where I wash my hands and/or fret about how little toilet paper we have left. I’m keeping it to hand-drawn maps, though. I’m not coming back here. In theory, I’m capable of loading myself up with all the responsibilities I had last summer, but physical school’s coming back in August and eventually I will run smack into a brick wall.

Plus, if there were any reason for me to want to come back here in the first place, it’s gone now. My current project is the creation of a parallel-US state similar to Virginia (where I grew up) and other Appalachian areas, and in the OGF world that’s been taken for about a 500-mile radius. My closest bet is AR120-31, and that’s on the wrong side of the mountains. Location aside, I’ve found that at least for me, hand-drawing maps is a lot faster and neater.

But, considering there are so many mappers here who know three decades’ worth more stuff than I do, I’m searching for advice. This is the rough layout of the entire state:

If it’s not clear, then I divided the paper into 9 sub-sections. Here’s the close-up of the northeast corner (which is the only one I’ve gotten to so far) (and yes, the capital is a small town named Corona):

Hello, East Ulethan mappers,

over the course of the next week (starting Monday, April 27th), administrative changes are going into effect in the region. Countries in East Uletha will be grouped into 16 sectors based on similarities in geography and culture, a division that will also be used for coordination of future development. Each territory will receive a new ID, as shown on the scheme below (e. g. Midistland, now UL031, becomes UL26a).

The changes require no work on your behalf – they will be carried out by me. Vegetation zones serve mostly as a recommendation to new users and nobody is forced to change their existing work. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Hello, I’m new to here, just started earlier today mapping in commonia. While starting a few small settlements I thought of something. I think it would be really interesting to do a community city that everyone can contribute to. One that’s not run by anyone, and instead a collaboration between everyone. If anyone’s interested in this idea comment on this post

Hello everyone. It is a great pleasure to greet you and I wish you all the best in the current situation.

Since we all probably have a little more time to map, I was thinking of developing a challenge to further develop natural mapping.

Sometimes when mapping we focus on urban and (I can say rural) aspects, but we forget about natural features, which are essential when mapping. In other cases we only label them without any detail or we use it only as filler.

But natural mapping should be more than that (since it is essential when developing any map), which is why I propose creating a challenge where all users can compete to develop the best natural mapping.

Please stop before we start reading some of the challenge guidelines:

  1. Only map natural features in your territory / state / region. Ask your neighbors if it is possible to do combined features (although this option would be a bit more realistic).
  2. It is up to you to decide which tag to use for natural characteristics. I recommend that a zonal standard can be established.
  3. There is no minimum size to map the natural characteristics, just use your creativity and create something realistic and eye-catching. But it is recommended that it be at least of a medium size, so that it can be appreciated correctly.
  4. When you’re done mapping it, please share it with the community, commenting a link below to appreciate its creation.

I leave to the community the decision to choose any other aspect related to the challenge.

I haven’t done a diary entry in ages, mainly cause i took a 2 month break from OGF Jan-March , and the fact that whenever i try ask for feedback , i basically get spam.

The Khatstow River sounds like it has a unusual name for a mostly-ingerish city. It’s named after Ambrozy Khatstow , the first person to attempt to settle land disputes around Cygagon in the 1840s , who lived just outside Point Fern in the village of Konwicz (Now Known as Andrewden).

I have tried my best to create a realistic large river , with several small shoulders ( and the Large Lake Hozanna by the coast ). I just want to know how i’ve done.

I don’t know what I did but the coastline is flooding. The coastline points the right way as intended. Maybe I deleted a point which was on a way connected to it without thinking about it.

PHEW: Nevermind… It was on the other side of the continent. I thought i deleted something by accident.

I have made several attempts to fix the same area as I posted in my last Diary, and nothing happened. I have never fully grasped the concept of multipolygon relations ( considering I primarily use iD). But what I want to know is the relation between inner/outer, and clockwise/counterclockwise. This might fix the problem, but it may take more time to figure this out. Could I please get some basic knowledge on multipolygons to make things look more realistic? (I also use Potlatch 2 as well)

Hello all. Here’s a formal request calling for production companies who wants to set up their overseas operations in Vang Ngat, Kuehong, which is the economic powerhouse for the country. If you want, do a somewhat mini-advert in the comments!

Operations can be for assembly, manufacturing and/or maintenance. Transportation links (rail and road) will be provided the sites proposed, if they have not yet been mapped.

This is a call specifically for some manufacturing industries, like electronics, locomotives, aircraft, ship building, automobile, which can provide for both military and civilian use. The Kuehongese military will be glad to welcome companies able to help develop its military for further peacekeeping purposes.

Places and sites may be limited, so other companies, which may not be able to get a place in Vang Ngat, will get another site somewhere else in Kuehong. Successful companies will be notified via DMs. You can propose a site or request me to arrange for you one, and also state whether you are able to build one in Kuehong or require me to build one myself.

If you have any further questions, also place in the comments and I will answer them.

Hello everyone! I need some technical help.

As a lot of my work on OGF is a copy of what I map on paper (which I personally find a lot more convenient), I am looking for a way to extract information from JOSM to get a file that I will be able to put on a program and print.

For example :

I would like to extract the relation of Egani’s boundaries and coastline. Then I need to find a program to make a very high resolution image (tens of thousands of pixels) of the data with lines. After that I may print a very big paper representing the data and work on it with pens and pencils.

Problems : - I Don’t know how to extract the data that way - I Don’t know which program to use to represent the relation on very high quality - Am I using the right technique to reach my goal?

I have no idea if what I want if possible, I cross fingers. If you have other ideas, I will be happy to hear them.

Thank you in advance!

This started off as a response to Yuanls’ recent diary (which I agree with wholeheartedly), but figured it was worth making a separate post.

Mapping improvement of any serious scale, especially for existing mapping is generally contingent on willingness to accept tips and feedback. I think a lot of the mappers who have been here for a while, including myself, are sometimes tempted to just blame new mappers for conflicts and a lack of receptiveness, but to be honest, in most cases, a lot of this is really contingent on how they’re approached. While I 100% agree with Yuanls that we need to focus on fixing the front end in the expectations of new mappers, I also personally think all more-experienced mappers active in giving advice to newer mappers need to become much better at constructive criticism so that we’re able to properly encourage newer mappers to improve rather than to fight us or to want to leave the site.

To be completely honest, the average critiquing style on OGF can often come across really toxic and condescending at times, which only grows the issue. Frankly, in addition to tweaks on the new mappers side, an “OGF:How to Give Constructive Respectful Feedback and Advice” page is probably in order for the older/more senior mappers here.

I’ve discovered even myself just these last couple months that a lot of newer mappers that can seem standoffish if confronted in an antagonistic manner are more than willing to take advice and tips if given directly, kindly, and with encouragement, acknowledgment of areas with potential, and respect. If our response to newer mappers is basically “your mapping is crap and you should feel bad”, of course their response will be a defensive one rather than receptive. We don’t want that. The spirit of the OGF experiment is one of collaboration and respect- and that spirit won’t thrive, or frankly, survive, if we don’t know how to approach mappers respectfully when giving feedback or advice.

After the previous diary post, I have decided to compile my thoughts and ideas on interface changes that may help to better introduce and inform new OGF users.

Problem 1: The way OGF presents itself

When a new user visits the OGF site for the first time, a box appears. This box introduces OGF at a conceptual level, but no deeper.

OpenGeofiction is a map of an imaginary world, created by a community of worldbuilders. You can take part in this project too.

You are then presented with two options: to ‘start mapping’ and immediately sign up and begin, or to ‘learn more’ and read the FAQ page. The FAQ page, I will address later.
