Kurzov’s use of cancelled:()=yes

I use the key-value combination cancelled:()=yes (alternatively, I also use highway=cancelled and cancelled=()) for roads or other features that were planned but never built due to environmental petition, community action, lack of funding, etc, etc…

For example, the Sakatia Ring Road (also referred to as the SRR, pronounced ‘serr’) in Sakatia, Levarrie was planned to be a full trunk road all the way around the Sakatia metro area, but was either never envisioned or cancelled before the road’s building, leaving Sakatians with a non-grade separated but divided highway through the south side of the downtown area, and a grade-separated partial bypass on the rest of the Ring Road.

For the cancelled “Colosseum Extension” of the SRR, I used the tags,

  • highway=cancelled
  • cancelled=trunk
  • cancelled:name=Sakatia Ring Road
  • start_date=1994
  • end_date=1997

Please tell me what you think. Or something like that. I dunno.

(edit: thanks markdown, I had to use “()” in place of an asterisk)

Hi!

I don’t usually post articles on the diary, but today I need to know your opinion.

I started mapping the new capital of Amsel yesterday, for now I like pretty much what I did at the center of the city, but I don’t know how to continue its development at the suburbs…

Moreover the area of the north of the city (near the university) doesn’t please me :( I think that it contrasts a lot with the rest of the city : it is too much circular for my taste, unlike the City center, even if it is meant to be a quite recent suburb (built in the 1980-1990).

What are your thoughts ? I hope you can give me some advice because I’m a little lost at the moment.

Greetings,

@redy

For real, this is some tips I do have for new mappers out there, unsure of what to build, i’d like to simplify the process for you, starting with the easy part INSPIRATION. What is your country based on? If the united states pops into your head you would go and place highways, but actually America was just forests and strange coastlines, the only reason the highways are all scattered is because of America’s urbanization on the land. So what should I do? One thing is to look around at roads in america, one place you’d never look is kentucky or west virginia, in those states there are a lot of hills, and highways have to follow the hill in order to go a specific way, so be bob ross and set your imagination wild. We are at the next step, unleashing your inner bob ross, now add realistic forests and mountains to your map, remember, don’t make it too filled with nature, because you need your towns and cities later, after you’re done, try mapping out a few towns and cities, but put it on rivers. America does this a lot, same with other countries with many rivers.

Here we are, the last part, designing your amazing flag, it might take some time to perfect but trust me, no flag is perfect.

(I might be untrustworthy but given me reading more ogf wiki articles i correct my past mistakes by filling up parts i left blank with amazing stuff, and in the end it looks, well okay.)

I recently discovered some of the remnants of my first attempt at a country still exists on the map. I also discovered how miserably bad it was. And when I say miserably bad, I mean “oh God that’s terrible block him before he messes anything else up” bad.

Part of me wanted to hope the original mapping stayed hidden/ignored forever. But I thought about it, and I felt that perhaps this will act as a bit of encouragement to newer mappers trying to get better, to show that if you’re willing to try, listen, look at examples, and take advice/constructive criticism/feedback, that you can improve.

Here’s the remains of the city of Noah in what I had at the time claimed as the first version of Freedemia in a different spot, ~2014ish:

this abomination here

And this is Quentinsburgh, Freedemia today, 2017, continuing to improve:

[not terrible if I may say so myself, still working on improving it daily] (http://opengeofiction.net/#map=13/-3.3853/-2.4529)

All this is to say, if you really care, and are willing to listen to advice from fellow mappers, learn different mapping techniques, look at well mapped countries and real life countries as examples, and take the time to slowly map and improve, it can make a difference and you can get better. Don’t lose hope. I know it’s been a bit rough on newbies around here lately, but understand that the majority of us just want you to learn from mistakes, keep improving, keep trying. If I’ve somehow managed to come this far, so can you.

Sincerely, Ernestpcosby

Hello fellow mappers, Since I started mapping I loved the OGF Wiki and especially the stat lists, something inside me loves checking which countries got the highest GDPs or murder rates. The thing is that we don’t have many of these lists, so I’m bringing some ideas, hope you like them:

  • List of countries by average wage
  • List of countries by unemployment rate
  • List of countries by housing type (houses, flats…)
  • List of countries with paid maternity leave
  • List of countries with universal healthcare
  • List of failed states

Hi everybody!

We are not completely satisfied with the “WikiForum” extension, but we have decided it’s the best option to provide forum-like functionality to the OGF community. Its advantages including being a part of the wiki (thus easy to maintain and integrated to the site). It can be a little bit wonky (the “edit” post function doesn’t work, for example), though, and it’s not particularly rich in features.

Anyway, it’s an improvement over these User Diaries, and it’s now open.

Since this is an announcement ABOUT the forum, how about you don’t comment about it below, and comment on the forum, instead? Try it out.

I have some news, Palaseskia will be remade soon. Here are the following things.

  • The states will stay, some small ones will leave.
  • The roads will be heavily remapped, with all highway systems staying the same.
  • Town and city names will stay, except for one or more.

If you have any ideas/suggestions for Palaseskia, feel free to comment about it.

Thanks…

Hello Everyone,

I have been here for at least 5 months, and I still don’t think that my mapping skills have gotten any better since Day 1. I am still very dissatisfied with my work and am willing to delete it all if needed. If anyone reading this has the time, could you please criticise my work in a comparison from Day 1 to now. I will not be disclosing the time I worked on it to give a fair atmosphere. Please give any advice, even if it is to delete it all and start over. Also, if I am to start over, I am wondering if I should start with all the roads connecting the big cities, then the small cities, then work on the big cities, then small. Any criticism is accepted, thanks.

Thanks, Zekiel

I was just wondering, is there an equivalent of Greek Life (or of the country Greece) in OGF as far as fraternities and sororities are concerned?

I was considering mapping a “Greek Village” of sorts on some of my college campuses for fraternities and sororities. It was then I was reminded there is no Greece. “Well then”, I thought to myself, “that could be an issue.” XD

Maybe something like “Latin Life”?

Part of me thinks it’s a bad idea to have them anyways so if there isn’t a good equivalent I’ll probably just leave them out of my society altogether to avoid grappling with things like widespread hazing, but it would be helpful to know. Thanks.

I have rediscovered some shortcuts I found a few months ago. I had forgot what they were until now. Here are 3 undocumented tools on the ID editor I found through chance. They seem to be little known and inaccessible without these shortcuts; I have not seen them mentioned elsewhere on OGF, or on the wider internet. ## Navigable map Bring up a small map of your surrounding area on the top left of the screen. It can be used to jump large distances by dragging the map. This can be activated by pressing the forwards slash (/) key. ## Wireframe view: Does what it says on the tin. Press the W key. ## Information box: Select an object and a tab appears in the bottom right of the screen. This gives the object’s ID, and its length if it is a line, and the object’s perimeter and area if it is an area. Press Ctrl+I.

I hope this makes ID a bit more bearable for its users.

EDIT: All 3 functions are listed on the ‘shortcuts’ page of the OSM wiki. They are quite easy to miss and are not separated from the standard functions, however.
