OpenGeofiction
I have been wondering if it is possible to see the OGF world as it was in the far past (relative to this site), such as say, 2015. (I’m not really looking for a certain date.) I think it would be cool to see how OGF has changed since then.
The only thing I have found is going to past versions of the overview map and seeing the different country shapes in certain areas (it looks extremely different in the AR120 area), but current mapping is shown underneath the country shapes. The mapping back then is what I would want to see, as it is hard to track down origins of old mapping. (I’m not looking to find the date that certain pieces of mapping were created either.)
I know this probably isn’t realistic, but is there a way?

Yes, but it is most likely not an easy way. You can take the complete Dataset, strip it of current data (with special tools), set up a something to render your map.

It is actually quite nice to dig up archives of the ol’ versions of OGF. As I remembered, AR120 was actually formed out of several large unclaimed territories im the area, so I think the admins then merged them to form AR120.
There are also significant border changes especially tropical Archanta, where there are large and small territories instead of just large territories.

One habit I’ve had for quite some time is to screenshot my work in progress as I go along. It gives a impression of how my mapping has developed. I can make some of these into a bliki and post them later if anybody’s interested.

The OSM software keeps old object versions in the database, with timestamp. So, theoretically it should be possible to extract a snapshot for any given date, with a suitable tool.
But there’s also a much easier method: I still have many old export files lying around somewhere, even if they’re not available on the backup page anymore. If there’s interest, I could upload some of them again. Of course, you’d still have to find a way to render them.
