My 5 Year OGF Anniversary

Posted by yoyo21 on 8 July 2020 in English (English)

Today I celebrate 5 years on OGF. My OGF "journey" has been a very odd one. I started out in Commonia as a newbie, where I created my first city, Hybrid Springs, which was terrible. I then claimed the country of Zanyizzix (current UL18b, none of my old mapping remains). It was awful and possibly one of the worst countries in the history of this site, incoherent with its neighbors and with absolutely awful mapping. If any former neighbors of me in Zanyizzix are reading this, I'm sorry. I was literally a child then and didn't really know any better.

Due to me going on many 3 month hiatuses from OGF, I thankfully lost Zanyizzix, but came back to OGF just a few days before the opening of the FSA and requested the state of Tulpanen (AR120-59). Originally, I mapped terribly in the northern part of Tulpanen. I later would go on to almost lose Tulpanen due to another OGF hiatus, only to return again a better mapper.

My first year of mapping Tulpanen, I didn't actually do much. I did a lot of work in Commonia instead. Terrible choice, I know. I built terrible, out of scale cities with way too many motorways. I reverted edits rightfully deleting motorways. Later on, I would realize the error of the ways, but the pendulum swung just as hard in the opposite direction, leading to me doing sometimes overaggressive Communion cleanups. Eventually I learned to just stay out of Commonia, sometime in mid-2019.

I traded in Tulpanen for my current state, Fellshire, as well as the area around Lacanier, Ardencia in early April of this year. I'll take this as an opportunity to share my latest work, the city of Otisport, Fellshire, inspired by Portland, Maine.

I don't even have a concrete reason for writing this post, just thought I'd share.

Congrats on your fifth year. Dont feel so bad: some people need some time to develop their skills and abilities to collaborate. Even after 3 and a half year here, im still not really what people will call an accompolished mapper. My first year, like you, sucks a lot, when I tried to develop Singkangia.

Congrats on your journey! You're still younger than me when I joined, but that just means a lot of good things are still ahead of you. Here's to another five years.

Nice job on five years, but I'm also feeling a little sympathetic. I joined just before my 14th birthday, but you'll barely find anything remaining from the first six months- most of it has been deleted out of sheer embarrassment. I couldn't even fathom joining at 10- not only would I would be the bane of the admin's existence, but I'd also be creating mapping eyesores that I would never be able to live down. I'm mostly just surprised that you stuck around and learned from Hybrid Springs/Zaniyizzix/Tulpanen instead of being like me and slinking off.

I was definitely annoying to admin in my first years here. Well, maybe annoying isn't the right word (I for the most part just wanted to be left alone to map terribly in peace), but I was considered a problem for sure. I was asked multiple times to move or alter Zanyizzix, but stubborn little me refused before I thankfully disappeared for a while. Part of me wonders if Zanyizzix was the reason that huge territories stopped being granted to new users.

Happy "cake day", as they say on Reddit !

Lol, I remember being one of those who asked for deletion of the incoherent Zanyizzix mapping.

By the way, your town Otisport looks promising ! probably will be much better than my own cities.

I used to live in Portland, Maine from 1994-1999.

I like how Otisport reminds me of Portland without actually imitating it. The peninsula is uniquely different, yet it does have a Northern New England feel in it's street layout.

There’s lot of forest and park space in Otisport, which makes sense, seeing Portland is known as “Forest City”.

One other thing that stands out about your mapping here is your sense of restraint: Portland has several (albeit short) freeways, but you hold back from imitating those real-world excesses. You manage to serve the entire city with just one highway (FS-221).

The map looks great, however the university is humungous!
