For another year, school has arrived. That means that many of us OGF mappers will be less or not active for the next 9 months. I don’t know why I didn’t post this earlier, as it is already three weeks into school for me… So please excuse us, and good luck for the year ahead!

Thanks, Trombonist2003

Also… I need constructive criticism for making major cities. I don’t have any as of yet, but it’s good to plan ahead.

And… I don’t know how exactly this happened. Help?

I feel time has come to start work on a complete revision of Säntjana, the Karolian capital. After a very short consideration I concluded that wholesale deletion of the city centre was the only way to go forward this, and whilst the basic layout of areas and important landmarks will be maintained in the new incarnation, the scale, logic and detail of the city will be much improved after four years of mapping.

The reason I am posting this in the User Diaries is because a number of you had embassies in the city, which I’ve had to temporarily delete. However I will make sure these are rebuilt in similar locations when the new street grid is in place. I may also make revisions to the two airports so again will endeavour to make sure any flight information on the wiki matches the live map.

A more detailed bliki entry on the start of this huge project will follow once more mapping is done. Suffice to say even after two hours’ work I am already much more satisfied with the Old Town and terminus station. I have a much clearer idea of the evolution of the city and plan to be working my way through time starting with the medieval city and moving outwards.

For those who like to spot that sort of thing, there will be nods towards the layout of Tallinn, Copenhagen, Budapest and Vienna amongst others.

The Introduction

Hello again! Last week’s Weekly Word was a massive success and I thank everybody for joining us last time in the last challenge!

I want to preface this week’s competition by announcing much more publicly here for last week’s Weekly Word our winner is

Ūdilugbulgidħū with Mickle Iction

His work was extremely nicely thought out, with not only landuse and buildings, but an eye for detail from farm names to tags to even the power poles! It was incredible detail and definitely helped to imagine walking through that village.

Now, I need to discuss the words. I’ve decided to change the format once again with the words, to offer you all chance to think about a word before the competition starts. I won’t give you the exact challenges but I’m gonna to tell you the word for next week as well so you can start thinking on the topic.

I’d still like you to submit words, and good words will be added to the end of the list, maybe if you give me a really good word, I’ll put it right to the top of the queue ;).

Now! The word for this week is;

HOT

Another word that could mean multiple things and interpreted in multiple ways. Hot to me could link to anything from a volcano, a desert, a tourist resort, to a fire station, or building gutted by fire. Whatever it is, it has to feel “hot” in one way or another. For examples this week;

But again, I suggest you go as out of the box as possible with this word and surprise me. A surprise is the best way to gain points ;P. Be as detailed or un-detailed as you want, again it’s not the only thing I judge off.

Your deadline for this challenge is;

2 October 12:00 Midnight UTC

And again, feel free to add more suggestions, next week’s word will be “Blue”, make good use of it! I look forward to your entries for this week, good luck everybody!

I followed the video exactly on how to set up JOSM, but after downloading the area I want to work on, the layer starts off as a black background with a bunch of lines. I tinkered around with the layers, and even reinstalled JOSM, but it still remains. Is this something that’s wrong with my computer, or is this a part of setting up JOSM for OGF?

P.S: We should get a Discord server just for OGF. Just my suggestion.

Thanks, Trombonist2003

Hey hey all, so this just came up on my Twitter feed, from the same coders who created Uncharted Atlas, another piece of code I follow.

Metropologeny appears to be a series of procedurally generated city and settlement maps that honestly, looking through, I would expect to see in OGF or real life! I’m amazed it was all done in code really! Thought it’d be something of interest for everybody to see, I’ll post another link below, and a link to the Uncharted Atlas, which is similar in that it’s procedurally generated countries. I would seriously suggest you check them out!

Weekly Word; The Introduction

Hello hello!

So we’ve slightly gone off the tracks for the Weekly Word, and I feel it’s because we’re mainly relying on members to take control of posting, responding, picking the winner, etc. Whilst it is nice to have a more community feel, I think that you need to have a strong and stable leader for the weekly running of it. So I’m gonna take an attempt at spearheading the whole thing, so welcome to the Pheonix Edition of the Weekly Word!

If you haven’t come across this game before, I’ll explain it to you in a quick fashion, any more questions you can direct to me or down in the responses.

The game runs for an entire week from Monday to Monday, roughly Midnight to Midnight UTC, though I might be a bit lenient for late entries by a couple hours. Each week, we will give you one or two words that will make you think out of the box in mapping something that is outstanding or unique.

I’ll also attempt to give you a few OGF examples of any words that are used.

NOW here is the twist in format for the Pheonix Edition!

Every entry HAS to be accompanied by 1 or 2 words that you would like to see in the next Weekly Word. I will then pick my favorite prompt for the next Weekly Word. So in reality, you can win twice on a Weekly Word if your prompt for next week is picked!

So let us continue with this week’s competition, your word you will be working with is

MINOR

Not everything that needs to be mapped are large Olympic sized stadiums, or Intercontinental airports, or massive multi-lane highways spanning an entire country.

There’s something to be said about the mapping of smaller items, it gives a sense of scale, location, economy, all sorts! So your challenge for this week will be to map something small, it could be a stadium or sports pitch, local or regional airports, country-roads, for example.

Like the Asian Continent Point here, I have added continent points for Uletha and Archanta. Can someone else do the same for Antarephia and Tarephia?

Anyone else can also add tags for multilingual names at these points like the Asia Continent point with translations of Asia in Arabic, Chinese etc.

Flag of Tojmidia

I have been working on Tojmidia for about 6 months on-and-off, but now I’m hoping to have a more definite goal for where the country is headed.

In the past few weeks, I have added administrative boundaries to all of Tojmidia and have undertaken work on Faarva state/province. Faarva state/province has seen the majority of my time. Fallo itself will take at least another month to complete, by which point I will move on and try not to add tiny pointless details like mapping individual trees (an urge I have to fight).

Once Faarva is done being roughly mapped with a few pockets of detail (Fallo and surrounding areas), I will start mapping Bolgan, a significantly larger city in Karitoft. Alvermod will come after that, (it’s more awesome because it has a coast) and Olbayan, the capital, after that. This means that it may be months before Olbayan sees significant mapping due to my preference of completing an area before I move to the next.
