Thank you all really much for keeping our country Vinnmark alive.

I’ve got some ideas for you. I’ve realised that kind of peninsula where the city of Vinn is, looks much like Northern Holland, also that zone where the city of Köln is reminds me of Friesland. So what about mapping a chain of narrow, inhabited islands just like the West Frisian Islands? It would look great!

Best wishes, Halvard.

Hello. I’m MrMiyagi. I’m the owner of Caladea. I made a quick little Wiki page to have a reference to the country with a map directed to the country so you can find it quickly. http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Caladea

I’ve been drawing fictional non-fantasy maps since childhood, so I’m excited to have found this project. I thought I was essentially alone in this. oneofbeatlefan, the owner of the Kingdom of Wallea brought me here.

As recommended, I’ve started by planning the topography first before man-made features. I’ve been reading up on the OGF world and my surrounding countries, and talked with the owners of Castilea Archantea and Angla about their vision for our shared borderlands, so that I could adapt Caladea’s topography to work logically with their already-established plans.

In order to be able to work out how their input would shape the topography of Caladea, I drew up a quick, rough 3D mock-up. It just makes it easier to be able to check to see if it looks right, and easier to have it as a reference to draw it in 2D in OGF. It’s nowhere near precise and refined, just a very rough draft.

Castilea Archantea’s borders are mostly mountainous, with the Sierra Ibarnea logically continuing into Caladea. Angla’s owner’s intention to have Dunas de Milta be steppes, whereas Caladea and C.A. are tropical in the White Sea region, my thought was that Angla would need a high range to capture much of the precipitation on the Caladea side, thereby leaving Dunas de Milta in a rain shadow when combined with the Angla Cordillera Salvajo

Input is most welcome, so I appreciate any time you might have to look at the 3D map and give some feedback. I intend to have a river appropriate to the Caladea central valley and its relatively steep descent, but did not draw it in as this is just a rough idea so far.

So I’ve been thinking, with regions across the world like the Middle east, The West or Western Europe, East Africa/West Africa, Sub-saharan Africa, Central America, East Asia, Central Asia, SE Asia etcetera which all share a few cultural, racial or religious similarities. Why can’t there be an Axian identity? My idea was to create an Axian bliki or some sort of history page, were Axians and nearby countries could discuss history, collaboration and everything possible related to Axia. I have already gotten positive feedback from the majority of the Peninsula (still haven gotten two replies), and thus I’m going ahead with my idea.

The reason for this User Diary is to involve non-Axian nations, as in most regions, their were likely outside influences to Axian history, things like Khaiwoonese trading, and Commonia’s close location as well as Belphenia’s similar language origin and location could all tie into Axian history. As the User Diaries sees a lot more eyes than the wiki does, and I feel anyone in the community could contribute ideas or info that could help us truly get a cohesive history going.

My main inspirations for this was Luciano- as he posted one thing he thought likely impossible was a “world history”, and I took that as a challenge. Who knows if history can be at least cohesive regionally we can eventually get the entire world connected. I was also inspired by the collaboration between Paroy and Mallorjhe.

While this might lead to more in depth/heated discussion and almost likely to lead to overwikification. The main and core purpose as Leowozy roughly stated:

  • A shared history between our region, specifically, Ancient peoples, migrations, empires and how our nations became “Industrialized”, as clearly NW/Central Uletha is the origin of Industrialization similar to real world England and later Western Europe.

Does anyone else wonder what a particular place had/had not been constructed would look like? Sort of like ‘alternate history’. Or how a place looked in the past. I covered the latter of the two some time ago in a previous diary entry of mine. Initially it was a one-off project but I’m considering doing more of these in the future.

Here’s my current work, which is an alternate scenario when a primary road had been built through a gap I left in the work I did. It was intended to form a a part of Glaster’s road building project of the late 1970s and early 80s, which left many roads and projects unfinished. Hence this gap has remained unfilled. The picture on the left is what it looks like now, compared to what it may have looked like had it been built. Has anybody else thought of doing this kind of thing or is it just me only?

Hello everyone!

So we have Luciano’s Monthly Mapper’s Challenge and Sarepava’s Coffee Break Construction (though the last one is rather inactive now), but I thought of a new weekly ‘mini-mapper’s challenge’.

It is called the “Weekly Word”. The rules are simple: every Monday I will post a word and you can, if you want, participate by mapping something that has something to do with that word. It may be anything: big and small. For example: if the Weekly Word is car, you could make a fuel station, a highway or just a parking area.

Do you think this is a nice idea?

Anyway, this week’s word is:

LOVE

I hope you will build something cool. Share your mapping in the comments!

Somewhere and somewhen I may have already written something about this: naming streets.

In my countries Řots and Wyster I of course complicated things by having introduced my own conlangs, which requires a lot of translation, e.g. Kermendegidu Vore in Nekkar (Řots) or the Bric sie Cepevard in Cervirc (Wyster) sound strange and unfamiliar, but they are merely the Stock Exchange Street resp. the Slaughterhouse Street.

In Wyster I added an English translation between brackets for the more important streets (e.g. Boolvar sie Eerbyc (Sunset Boulevard); maybe I will do so as well for similar streets in Řots.

Naming streets after objects and abstracts is one thing, but naming them after persons is another, especially when the enormous source of available famous persons that our earth has to offer, doesn’t - necessarily - exist on the OGF planet. I worked on naming streets in Cervirc and Searpeg in Wyster today: the city quarter of Erdhe Bliesse (“Green Houses”, I hope the names are visible yet; here it takes an awful lot of time until the map shows the changes I made) has streets named after scientists. I searched on the Wiki for names from all over the OGF world - btw I didn’t pay attention if the persons I used are still alive, or controversial, or otherwise unsuitable to name a street after - so I managed to fill this quarter.

For the southern part of Fooc I started with composers (of classical music), but didn’t get any farther than Toomas Pästoreiin, Franz Kleppenberg, Ernst Lumm, John Scoplin (I enjoyed reading about him btw), and Wystrian composer Peus Jinnyc (the street says ‘Pus’, but that’s genitive case). So I need some more composers for at least twelve streets (if possible from different countries)! If you have them, I will gladly accept them :)

Came across an article about weird names like zzyzx I read here.

I know that in our world, there should be numerous ‘weird’ names that are still ‘user-friendly’. In Commonia there are a bunch of them, like Port to Earth or Minn-Am-Gabots for towns.

I just want to know what other weird names are there, for towns, cities, places and even countries and states. Please post them here and their location, and even possible, write a rationale for each name. (Make sure these are mapped with quality before posting!)

I should praise Ūdilugbulgidħū for names like Ūdzđąnąrąt and Telkhug Ēkdŭn. I also favoured names like Khaiwoon, which is a quite exotic name, with, of course, quality mapping.

Well, it’s been a long while since I’ve touched Fressland, and although there was a small batch of edits in May, it’s time to give up Fressland for good. I will no longer be editing Fressland, and I’m opening it up for a new mapper to continue.

Farewell, Fressland…

FiNAL NOTE… Kurzov.

PS: I’m going to be returning to the country that I edited only once or twice, and has since expired. Its new name? Drakonia.

Hi,

I’m a 13 year old mapper from the United Kingdom and I contribute a lot to OSM and try to on OGF too! :)

I know that asking for feedback here seems to be discouraged, but I’ve been working on a small island nation for the past few months, Las Islas Serenas, and I’d like some feedback on how my main island looks and the city of Velasco. Please tell me some things I could improve on and things features I could add!

Also, in case people are wondering why the country boundary is very big for the size of the nation, it is because I’ve just deleted a bunch of islands and I’m planning to add and work on some more.

My islands are Castellanese (Spanish to the real world) speaking, but I’m only fluent in English so I may have made some mistakes. If you spot any, let me know!

Just for introducing myself: I am a fiftysomething mapper form NorthWest Europe. I have been drawing maps on paper from childhood onwards and am now happy to do this modern style.

I map on a very small (20 by 20 km.) part of West Commonia: the county of Santa Maria del Mar, which is no more than a former small-and-scenic fishing village gone touristy and some extremely ugly new development area near its train station (really meant to be as horrible as posible - thats versimilitude for me).

Announcing OGF:Photo resources, where you can find photos from other mappers to use in your wiki articles, and you can share your photos for others to use in their wiki articles.

Just read the important guidelines for photos, then set up a photo collection on any photo sharing site, and then link to it on the OGF:Photo resources page. Easy!

I have been inactive recently due to working on my other projects like games, shows, and films.

I have recently thought of starting a film that takes place in the OGF world in Palaseskia, but it is unknown on what it will be or be about.

I will soon try to work on more of Palaseskia and see if I can try fixing up some of the places that look so crazy built to me.

Thanks for reading…

After a long absence I mapped a small area in the north of Řots last weekend. I was pleasently surprised to see that the iD mapping tools have improved to my liking and that there is now a mobile version for OGF!

Since the activity at my RL work and in other geofictional projects is rather unpredictable, I can’t guarantee that a new mapping spree is imminent, but I’ll do my best :)

I’m not sure how pessimistic or how strange I sound in this entry; my intention is to be purely realistic.

Basically, Glaster is irrelevant. Yes you heard me right. Glaster is irrelevant. It never was a superpower. It never had a place on the world stage. It’s like one of those countries that, outside its region, you know only by name, or by a few facts from a Wikipedia entry. Glaster never had an outstanding economy or some special cultural hotspot. The only famous people are dead and confined to the knowledge of historians, or have moved abroad to some more prosperous location.

While this might sound very depressing, here is some of my reasoning (skip to the tl;dr if this section is too long):

  • Glaster is very small. It has slightly larger than real-world Brunei and a population of around 1 million (subject to change). It’s not in a very advantageous position, considering that its much larger neighbours were at odds with Glaster until the end of the 20th century.
  • Glaster’s small size and advantageous position (at a maritime bottleneck) has meant that it has exploited and suppressed, first by Wyster, then by Ingerland, then Commonia, then by the communist nations surrounding it.
  • Glaster has no deposits of major resources. Iron and coal deposits exist but they are not substantial enough to profit from. Tourism is also out of the question. There’s nothing really to see or do in Glaster, and the weather is not great either according to the climatic map.
  • Glaster only reached its level of development by funding from Ingerland to prop it up against communist influence. Now its unsustainable and Glaster is currently in economic decline. It has not been able to modernise its economy sufficiently after Ingerish South Glaster had its unification with less-developed North Glaster.

I know that asking for feedback in the user diaries is generally discouraged, however i get the feeling the bliki is more of a week long project, and i am a bit busy nowadays, so yeah. (Exams are in two weeks and they are hell important so i am mostly studying.)

Anyway, Loravias Old Town. Its beautiful!. I mapped a bit without planning or drawing, and i think it turned out particularly well. I think my mapping is getting progressively better, so i would apprieciate some feedback.

There restaurants, cosy squares, small kiosks and shops, and an old Neo-Renaissance style railway station, which is by many considered useless due to its proximity to the central station, however was kept because, well, it was the first, and, its beautiful.

Also, on embassies:

Why do people map “embassy districts”? Little to no cities have places like that, most embassies are just scattered, or concentrated in one part of town, not in massive 19th century style villa-neighbourhoods. This is why i am going to simply map embassies in whatever free buildings are left.

Next week i am working on the Main station, and the surrounding neighbourhoods, so stay tuned.
